    Have you not thought of the quality contents that you can upload to your site for a good ranking and more traffic? Getting a good ranking in the search engines will be started by a quality content and that also includes the good keywords that you have tagged the said content on the web page. But being safe from the Penguin update I am wondering why we should be scared of that. As long as you are doing SEO methods legitimately then there is no worry of a sanction.

    I will like to answer and address your questions. Although this was asked a while ago now and things have changed a bit. There's all the new Google Algo updates to take into consideration now as well. You need to do only high quality SEO now and have a great site to be in with a fighting chance! Forget about edu backlinks, they're well too overrated! A link from a .com is just as valuable if it's a high authority site and if it's a from a related site than that is even better. You'll be tough pushed to find a .edu or .gov site that is related to your site. They are mostly reserved for governments and educational services only, because of such people think getting links from them is better than links from any other tld such as a .com but that's simply not true. While they can provide some value in having its only in that they are often high authority sites themselves but it doesn't always make them valuable links to have. As for pyramids well that's just an old method now that has had a billion do overs and still goes on today. But it's only a really simple case of building links on top of links on top of links hence a pyramid but that can be seen as a blackhat thing to do and all backfire on you resulting in a penalty of the algos detect it. Don't think about edu or gov or link pyramids, think about what you can provide in way of content and what things your intended audience is searching for such as solutions to problems or just through great researched content that gets shares and goes on to rank high forever without having to engage in silly things like building edu/gov links and link wheels and pyramids and all that trickery and tom foolery!

    Google will penalize sites for having backlinks built to fast by blasts from programs such as SeNuke and Xrumer.. penguin now says "slower is better", and SEO experts are recommending links built in blocks of about 25 per week MANUALLY will keep a site indexed and not taken off the google searches.
    EDU links built by a person, not a bot, are still extremely effective.

    My suggestion for the website to get a good ranking is the contents. When you regularly upload high quality contents to your website, it can be seen by the search engines and your site will be considered updated (contrary to being stagnant). In that regard, the rank of your website will increase or will be maintained it already has a good ranking. And the increase in ranking is not exclusive to Google but also to other search engines.
