Sites linking in and backlinks ?

This might just sound stupid, but i'm new to SEO and have no clue about it. I`ve been searching Google and could not find a relevant answer.
According to Alexa.com my site has 30 sites linking in , but according to seospyglass tool i have only 1 backlink.
Similar when searching alexa for my other site i have about 300 sites linking in but only 28 backlins.
Can someone please explain what is the difference between "sites linking in" and "backlinks"

backlinks are urls links in other sites that takes you back to your website/blog when clicked. while i think sites linkin in means links that indirectly links back to your website,, i think they are mostly main page domain links that indirectly goes to your website when clicked.

Pardon me for not knowing what a linking in means because this is the first time that I have encountered that term. I am quite familiar with backlinks because it is my current subject in my learning. With backlinks you can get traffic in 2 ways – 1 from the search engine and another when the reader clicks on the backlink. That is my only contribution to this discussion.
