well, there are several techniques for SEO, some of them are condemned by the search engines as they twist the rules and guidelines of SEO and help the web-masters in taking an unfair share. All such techniques are unethical SEO a.k.a black hat SEO

they will give quick results but short term ones. Ethical SEO is long lasting and care free

Speaking of unfair share I have to agree that some webmasters are good in the tricks of the trade that they can manipulate the SEO methods to gain more traffic to their site. When I first encountered the link pyramid I was unaware that it was not legal or legit at all because it is like cheating the search engines. And then I chanced upon a discussion that said we have to avoid the link pyramid for it can be a reason for a sanction.

Ethical (blackhat) SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is when you do SEO that's ethical to do! It's a no brainer!

The questions:

But what is ethical and what isn't when it comes to the SEO that you can do? How can you know what ethical SEO is and what isn't?

What makes SEO ethical or unethical? Is all SEO ethical or unethical? Is doing no SEO ethical? Does it make you an unethical person if you do SEO?

The answers:

For starters, it doesn't make you an unethical person if you do SEO. And doing unethical SEO doesn't always make you an unethical person either. You can still be a good person and upstanding citizen of the world even if you do unethical SEO. It's a perfectly legal cat and mouse game you play with Google where you are attempt to get higher ranking for your website by building some backlinks to your site in some way which could be looked at as a bh (blackhat) technique by a search engine such as Google. If you tried to do that because you're naive, inexperienced and thought it would work. Because you was trying to put some food on the table then that doesn't make you a criminal! It makes you stupid, naive and desperate. Especially if you don't know much about SEO and bh methods. All it takes is one bad link for a manual investigation to take place and a penalty to be applied which can be a right nightmare to deal with and remove.

From what I understand about ethical SEO, it is the method that we were advised in the discussions in this site particularly with the keywords and the contents. But copying and maybe that includes spinning contents can be considered unethical. And although they can pass the SEO check of search engines, duplicated contents can be hazardous because once it is caught by the search engine, we can already expect a downgrading of the ranking on the search list.
