    You can use opensiteexplorer for free, you can also use SEO spyglass free version.

    You could also sign up to SEOMoz (who run opensiteexplorer) for a free trial for a month, you don't pay if you cancel before 30 days I think.. you might want to check that.

    Using both of the tools I mentioned for free combined you can usually build up a pretty accurate picture, thats assuming you're looking into a smallish sites, if you want to analyse monsters you will probably need to pay.

    Also you can just google a competitors URL or brand name in quotes, so"brand.com" or "brand" because usually a lot of the best links (natural links) a site gets, the anchor text is the brand name or URL

    Majesticseo is another one you can use for free, also obviously google webmaster tools and bing will show you your own links.
