    Ttitle tags and URL's

    What rolse does Title tags and URL's play into being ranked on google?

    I had an audit done and I have:

    72 pages have a too long URL (>115 chars)
    255 pages have a too long title tag

    Does this play a big role? Should I clean them up? The URLS are named after the product.

    Should I have any of my ranking keywords in the URL or title?

    II would definitely go with the keyword within the URL be sure that you are not over optimizing everything. It should look natural as is a part of the article.

    There are some advantages if you include the keyword in the title :
    First, the keyword will appear in the status bar.

    Second, Google is paying a lot of attention to your main keywords in the result page and by having it there, it may increase your CTR.
    Regarding the length of the URL, i would keep it shorter, 50 characters should be enough. Not that any search engine have a problem with this but rather of user friendly reasons. A shorter one is easier to remember, to parse and to share on social media.

    First I would reduce and shorten the URLs that are already marked as too long, it can really damage your overall SEO, having very BIG URls.

    Second, if we are referring to title tags that are too long then make them shorter and keep them under 70 characters. Be careful, the title tag is the one that appears in the search engine, you can still have very long titles on the page itself but you must mark them as H1.

    Also, if the URL you want to make it short is a product page and the product name is very long, try to keep the important bits in the URL, but make it shorter nevertheless.

    Thanks for this very interesting topic. I have wondered about the length of the URL before since I also got those as errors once when I got a report from someone. I ignored those long URL problems though because in all honesty I didn't know how to make them shorter because I was told to never change a URL once it has been published.

    So how would you go about making the URL's shorter? Would you do a redirect to a new shorter URL with the same content on it? This is where everything gets a bit confusing for me, so you would copy all your content to a new page with the new shorter url and redirect the old page to the new page... so that any traffic that page is getting would move to the new page. Would this not then be duplicate content?

    Thanks Everett, I am going to try that with my links in future. I have heard about stop words and I read a bit about them a while back but I never thought of removing stop words from my urls to make them shorter... I can see how that would be beneficial Ttitle tags and URL Thanks for the tip.

    What roles do Title tags and URL's play into being ranked on Google?

    Google is on a quest to make the web simplified and user friendly. So long URL's aren't really simplified and user friendly. This is because they take longer for a person to fully see and because Google only shows so many characters in its SERPs, they get truncated and don't show. This is not user friendly because it means the person searching can't see all the words within that URL. The best SEO practices have often been that you should have title tags shorter than 77 characters, which is what the search engines have historically shown.

    The other thing about long URL's is that they effect usability and sharing too. People are less inclined to share long URL's. Although today you can use a URL shortener but this is not really a solution and can even hinder clicks as people can hold URL shorteners in contempt.

    And there is of course that long URL's aren't easy to remember and type.

    What is easier to remember and less likely to get truncated in the SERPS from these two example URL's?

    domain.com/a-really-long-url-showing-how-hard-it-is-remembering-really-really-long-urls-are-to-remember

    domain.com/really-shorter-url-easy-remember

    Yes definitely. Go through them and look at them from a people searching it perspective. Remove any stop words and make sure they have the main keywords you want to rank for at least once and no more than twice. Try to shorten them so they don't get truncated in the SERPS.
    Should I have any of my ranking keywords in the URL or title?

    Yes make sure it has the main keywords in the URL as well as in the title. You can use stop words in your Title of course. But don't repeat your main keywords more than twice or this can be seen as keyword stuffing.

    As Everett has pointed out, Google ignores some words altogether. Stop words like to, from, at, by, it, the, as etc etc. It's fine to remove them from the URL if they are in the title and should be in the title too. Without stop words, things don't really make sense. And in some cases, a keyword can get more volume using its stop word rather than plurally. Just keep things short, sweet and to the point.     So my shop is built using shopify, and there are 2 spots there is a title spot as soon as you enter the product page then down at the bottom there is a SEO preview spot should I edit the meta and page title in here along with making the url shorter

    I haven't ever worked on Shopify before but yes it is the meta title and meta description that counts towards SEO and ranking so this is where you must put your focus.

    Title tag technically called title elements,define the Title of a document.Title tags are often used on search engine result pages to display preview snippets for a given page.

    URL Structure is important because it helps the search engine to understand relative importance and adds a helpful relevancy metric to a given page.
