    I think they're important. Originally they were created to emphasize the most used words or the words that people would search for to find the page, but over the years webmasters abused them so much that search engines put less emphasis on them.
    They still help somewhat, however.

    Its not that important anymore according to most search engine these days. google claimed years ago that they don't already use meta tags. however, meta tags still appears in their searches, so it is still not a bad idea to use it but you probably shouldn't concentrate more on it.

    Meta tags are important for search engine optimisation for a couple of main reasons. The first being that some search engines use the contents of the keywords and description tags to determine the content of the page.     meta tags are the keywords that a webmaster uses to influence search engines. Meta tags tell the search engines what the content is all about. A couple of years ago, meta tags were very important for search engine visibility, However, the webmasters misused this feature so much that most of the search engines are not recognizing meta tags. The webmasters tried to trick search engines by using tags that were indifferent to the content.

    From what I know the meta tags are being checked by search engines for the first part of the evaluation. If the meta tags are relevant then the site gets some points for the good position in the ranking. However there are discussions that say the meta tags are not being considered by Google anymore. To be honest I am really confused in this issue because there are so many talks when it comes to Google policies.
