White hat ways of getting high quality .edu backlinks?

What are some legit ways of getting quality .edu backlinks? I don't want any blackhat techniques where everything is automated. Just pure ideas of getting .edu links.

I'll start with the only .edu high-quality, site-wide anchor backlinks I manage to obtain in my SEO career.
So I wanted to increase the website authority of a popular Medical Facility. I decided a .edu link can improve their authority and therefore rankings quite a lot.
I've looked at about 3 universities in that area that also had a Medical School. From these 3, one of them had a dead Student website&blog that was dead and unused. So I contacted the student counsel offering a full Wordpress blog implementation and design in exchange of a sitewide backlink on the university's main website. Worked like a charm and everybody was happy in the end.

What techniques do you guys have?

Thank you! The core of the idea got it from someone else I think. I'm sure I read it somewhere, or at least something similar that stuck in my mind for future use.

That's a great idea. I know many schools and colleges that have websites but these websites are dead. I might them offer my help to revive their websites in return for backlinks to my site. I have a domain called freeclassroom.info I am thinking to start an online learning program on this domain and I think having quality backlinks to my site from dot edu will add value to my site.

I agree with the comments that it’s a great idea. However, isn’t it too much time that you spend just for that backlink in the edu site? I know that a high authority site can give you a high quality backlink but I never imagined that it will need some espionage skills just to place your backlink in that authority site.
