From what I understand about the search engines crawlers, after they validate the domain name they would check on the meta tags because that is the confirming identity of the web page. That means the meta tags are still very effective and even potent when it comes to the SEO of the site particularly for that web page. By the way it is not only Google that reads that meta tags but also all the other search engines.
