Meta tags are HTML codes that are inserted into the header on a web page, after the title tag.Yes meta tags are still very important. because title tags and meta description are showing in search result. If meta description not found on a web page then Google show description from directory which is relevant to a web page.

They are important. Especially the title and meta description. Keywords are not recognized by all SE's, but if you have time.. It's also important to have different meta tags information for every inner page of your website (or as long as this is possible!)
