Recent Updates From Google Themselves

Hi guys and gals,
I thought I would just start a small post about something I came across a week or so ago which I think most will find interesting.

If you didn't already know, Google have been making some subtle updates to their algorithms lately, and this is post any penguin announcements; Google in fact make updates all the time but this latest one seems to be quite significant.

As we all know and Google likes to drum into us, we should all be creating quality content. However, it now seems that if you have been into article marketing or press releases, the optimized anchor text is going to actually violate their guidelines.

It seems to be a bit of a grey (British spelling) area as the over-optimization penalty is already old news so maybe we really need to back off from building any keyword rich links on those types of platforms until we know what the deal is.

I'll be testing as usual so if I get a chance, I'll post the results here to see if there really has been any changes or not.

I didn't noticed anything specific. Can you share some reports like how the changes effected to your site or somebody?

ill be doing some testing this week. This isn't something that would effect me as I don't do mass article or press release marketing. This one could be an interesting case study

Ok. So, do you mean users whose site get updates frequently are under scanner? :|

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Basically people who build links using article and press release submissions need to be a bit more careful.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

BarryinSiam
Well I'm sure it's more complicated than that ha ha

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It is always like that! I mean whenever google does something, it is complicated ;). BTW, by press release you mean offline promotion of sites through newspaper? If yes, then how can that effect a site?

Yeah they won't make it easy! By press releases I mean online for example publications about your site via prnewswire.
They can be an excellent source of traffic though

Sounds good Jake...As there's a lot going on with google, ill be testing a lot these coming months

Yes, you are right... anything can be updated which Google think of, it is over optimization according to their over all signals.

Yep. Apparently August the 21st and Sep 4th, a lot of people reporting rank drops...I guess a lot of seo providers were blamed for this; tricky industry!

I wouldn't entirely blame it on seo providers. I mean they did there job, with current system in mind and users who bought the services were happy after adjustment. What can we (webmasters) do if google is moving towards corruption and giving more importance to sponsors webpage and introducing all ridiculous TOS.

Amazing. So, how easy is it to get backlink from prnewswire? I mean sometimes when I try to get backlinks, the site owners ban my ip :|

A lot of press release sites you have to pay for but they're worth it IMO
You should use private proxies if you are building links or if you don't want to pay, hma have a public list but they're likely spammed by thousands of people

On one of my sites, I saw an actual gap in rankings starting on aug 16th but rankings coming back on aug 21. Some at the rank they were and others a few spots higher. I imagine the testing or plans to penalize from Google are for people/sites who abuse these (PR/Article) methods. If you search around the net there are some people who are promoting multi tiered PR linking (pr links, backed by 2nd tier PR links, and so on) strategies as a primary means to rank (especially wso sites). Articles not so much as this has been around as a method for a while if used correctly, but if using auto approve article sites, or those which appear spammy then this is probably targeted as well. Also as a rule of them for anybody starting out in SEO, before doing anything in regards to building links, do some research for your niche. Not doing the proper research is the fastest way to get your site put in a sandbox or worse deindexed. What I mean by research in this regard is pay attention to the frequency of links being built by people who already hold good rankings for your niche/keywords, and see how often Google updates/indexing sites for those keywords. I have even seen ranking dropped when using a indexer to get pages indexed for some niches (hence drip feeding being adapted) but also some links are better when naturally indexed (not going to say to much as I feel it is going to lead to a different discussion, so back to what the thread is about)

Most algorithmic changes specifically target abuse. In fact in one of my recent studies I compared 3 websites against one of my sites I manage across about 20 keywords and the top 3 sites in 2 to 3 seo tools get bad scores (F's) for on page optimization for probably 70 percent of the keywords they rank in top 5 for, furthermore their social activity is either non existent of just a few followers per profile. So in that particular niche it is a natural occurrence to downplay on page optimization to an extent when competing across several keywords. Digging deeper you can see that every site that is on page one is highly optimized but in a smart methodical way. This further supports taking a natural approach to what is being respected/trusted and rewarded by Google for the niche you are targeting. If you are in a niche that rewards using PR and articles release because it is natural to the niche, then do so, but choose paid/trusted sources and don't spam.

Hopefully this makes sense, I tend to run things together sometimes.

I think the reason for it is not seo companies but people who create "seo magic bullet products" and sell to new comers who don't yet respect or know enough about seo, keeping customers for the longterm etc. They make money off these new comers trying these methods and abusing them until Google is forced to do something about it.
