How do I choose correct keywords for which I should optimize my web site?

I want to build a website and optimize it for high search visibility. I have many keywords in my niche that I want to optimize my website for.

How can I choose the right keywords that can make my website's optimization fruitful and will make ranking easier?

First start with your main keywords and branch off from there.

I'll use "Internet Marketing" as an example since a lot of people who will be reading this probably know what that is.

In the United States there are 50 states and you can target each one individually. This will help you start building a long tailed keyword list since you can add keywords like "Illinois Internet Marketing" "Texas Internet Marketing" "Florida Internet Marketing" and so on. That will give you a set of 50 high quality keywords to add into your list.

You can now target specific counties in each state. There are roughly 3,200 counties in the United States and that will jump your keyword list pretty high. I'm going to use Illinois as an example since that's where I live. You can target keywords like "Cook County Internet Marketing" "Dupage County Internet Marketing" "Will County Internet Marketing". I would assume you won't get as many clicks with this method because even I have never been like "Oh, I should search for something I want based on the county I'm in!". There's a small chance this will work well, but if you're targeting these keywords by just addint articles to your website which are targeting a specific county, then it won't hurt.

So, you can now expand your list by targeting keywords like "Chicago Internet Marketing" "Naperville Internet Marketing" "Kankakee Internet Marketing" and so on. You'll want to cherry pick the cities/towns in order to get the best results and reduce your list so that you don't go insane with all the keywords. Target cities/towns based on their population and you will reduce your work load and increase your profits. Why? because the towns/cities with a higher population tend to have more revenue flowing through them. I live in a town that has 140,000 people in it and I know there are millionaires all over the place, that's who you want to target. You can most likely find a list on wikipedia that shows all the states in a town based on population. I wouldn't target anything under 30,000 people since your list is going to get fairly large if you pick anything lower.

In Conclusion:
If you wanted to put together an enormous list, without cherry picking, you could use the above method to generate roughly 23,250 additional keywords for each of your main keywords. An enormous list, yes. But I'm sure you can figure out a way to alter this method and cherry pick the absolute best keywords that will have a low CPC and a very high ROI ;) I know I've done this before for one of my websites and found a keyword I was paying $0.05 per click and making around a 2,000% ROI.

My advice:
Take your time.
Crunch all the data.
Cherry Pick only the best keywords.
Start your work and monitor everything like a hawk.

Keyword research is of utmost importance. The problem is that many do not know where to start other than having a couple of basic and quite obvious keywords in mind. But it takes more work than that to get good results.

Keyword research will enable you to:
1. Learn which terms you should target in your site.
2. Learn more about your customers and the target market.
3. Notice shifts in demand in your target markets.
4. Be aware what web searchers are searching for, and so you can then base your content and even your products or services on that.

All this information is both insightful as well asn enlightening, and thus keyword research needs to be done really well so as to get such information. At the end of the day it is not only about getting as many visitors as possible. That is indeed important, but you also need to make sure that you are getting the RIGHT TYPE of visitors.

Each keyword's value thus needs to be ascertained. Consider if the keyword is relevant to your site's content and if searchers will find what they are looking for on your site when they carry out a search with that keyword.

I am not also good at keywords but my take is to use the keywords that are nearest to your niche. It doesn’t need to be a synonym but any other word that is relevant to the niche. For example the niche is pets, the keyword you can use can be any animal or even insects, breed of dogs, species, etc. And in the particular webpage, you can also use keywords related to the contents like if the story of pet is located in another country, that country can also be used as a keyword. Correct me if I am wrong on my notion.
