I agree that doing SEO work is the only means of getting a good ranking in the search list of search engines much more in Google because the majority of websites now are doing SEO work on their sites. If you will be doing only the spot promotions of your site once in a while then you will be left behind by the competitors. It is best to know SEO methods that would work in particular for your site.

Try to use white hat methods and also provide quality backlinks to your site and don't try produce any spam links. Google will penalize them.

When you say Google, I am assuming that you mean the search engine list. And being on the top spot is the goal of website owners. Now, the problem is how to be number 1 or better yet, how to be on page 1 of the search list. This is the main reason for the popularity of SEO methods like using keywords or putting in new contents to get your link noticed by search engines. There are other ways like marketing your website in social media or posting links on other websites.
