Recently, after the new changes that Google made ??with Panda and Penguin in forum signatures are not really that good, or even harmful in most cases.

You better stay away from this technique. If you can use forums to get links in posts good content, if you can get into profiles better beware.

If you are a member of a forum and you had posted a comment that is very interesting then the reader may check on the link that is embedded on your profile signature. With that scenario, the signature still has a big role in SEO because it can give your site the traffic from that signature. And if the forum has countless of active members then you can imagine the chances of your forum signature to be clicked.
