How google got its name?

Google's name comes from the misspelling of the word "googol" which is the name for a (very large) number: "a one followed by one hundred zeros".

Interestingly enough, Google's first search engine product was named "BackRub".

However, the founders were apparently paranoid that it would be construed as a porn destination ("Wet box"), so they changed it again.

I like this number. We also learn it at the university. Googol is the biggest number ever known... But it's really interesting because when you say Google, everybody knows it... How did they find such a WORD that is so ... interesting?

The name 'Google' itself was derived from a misspelling of 'googol' (ten raised to the power of a hundred) but the original name for the search engine was BackRub', paying homage to the theory of the importance of back linking, or citation, which was the cornerstone of the project.
