How do I determine the proper keywords for my site and how many can I use?

Some methods require up to 3 keywords, some a bit more, some a bit less. However, this generally depends on the method of SEO and such. As for proper keywords, I generally would create one base keyword with 2/3 words, and use similar words that fit the base keyword. . kinda like creating a story where in the center you have the title, and the bubbles on the outside are ideas and such.. this is what I do and it seems to work fine for me.. just one method though as their are many many many.
