How important are nofollow backlinks to SEO?

I know Google doesn't count nofollow links, but how are they really important to SEO?

I really don’t know why some site owners set their web page to no-follow which I think is a sign of selfishness. When you post your backlink on a regular web page, you get traffic 2 ways – first is the traffic from the reader of the web page that clicks on your backlink and the second way is by the searcher who clicks on the link in the search list. Posting on a no-follow will afford you the first way only and it cannot benefit from the search list because the no-follow web page is not read by the search engine crawler.
