When you're working for yourself, or even a big corporation, you'll need to learn some sort of automation in order to make yourself more productful. Think about it, if you were to use some sort of automation and be more successful with your business or the company you work for, you'll make more money and maybe even get that promotion you've been targeting for the longest time.
Automation can work for anyone within the company, not just the employees, and it can help the business in whole be more productful. Think about it, if a call center didn't have some sort of automation they would have to manually dial each number and that would increase their workloads tremendously. Yeah, dialing a number may only take 10 seconds each time, but if you're dialing 400 phone numbers each day it would add up to 4,000 seconds, which is 1 hour and 7 minutes of time that could have been saved by an automated system that manages all the phone numbers and dials them whenever a person hangs up. If each person were to do this extra hour of work each day, that would be 5 hours a week or 260 hours a year, which would only be larger for each employee you might have. If you had 10 employees, that's 2,600 hours that went into just dialing phone numbers!
Below are some reasons you need to focus on some sort of work automation, and they are:
Turn 60 hours a week into 10
If you start automating tasks that take up a few seconds or minutes, you're freeing up your workload a ton, which can reduce your hours from 60 to 10 if you're lucky. Now, going from a full-time schedule to just 10 hours is a big-time cut, but it's possible for some niches out there. Outsourcing what can't be automated through programming will decrease your hours per week dramatically due to someone else doing the work for you, which is really a nice thing in the long run 
Lower your monthly payroll
If you can automate certain tasks of your business, you can essentially remove the need of someone coming in to perform small and remedial tasks. A secretary is necessary for some businesses, but not most of them, so you likely don't need one unless you have an office that has a lot of foot traffic and you don't want to talk to people yourself. Now, if you run a digital service and need a form of secretary to answer emails or chat systems, you can simply hire a VA and be done with it. Sure, you might have to vet a few dozen people before you find the right one, but that's pretty typical.
Removing positions within your company might mean you need to get rid of some people, but you'll save a ton of money in the long run, and you need to remember you didn't get into business to make friends. Yes, firing people isn't the easiest thing to do, but as a business owner, you need to come to the realization that it could happen.
Automation doesn't ask questions
One of my favorite things about automation is that it won't fight you on what you're trying to do unless the programming is wrong, and that's usually a good thing. If you automate your help desk to a point where you have dozens of canned responses, you won't have to worry about someone asking you how to answer a question that comes in. If you have a VA answering everything, they should be familiar with your company enough to look through your canned responses and answer accordingly.
If you can automate almost everything to do with the back end of your business, you will notice you don't have to talk to many people, which means you don't have to answer questions from people Now, some of you may like talking to people all day, but you're a rare breed of person and that's pretty awesome because most of us hate talking to strangers all day long lol.
In conclusion
Automation can save you time and money, which is always good for your business, and it could catapult you up towards success for yourself or even get you a promotion you've had your eye on. Your 12+ hour day might turn into a 2 or 3 hour work day depending on how much you can automate, but you need to remember that every little task you an automate will compile and save you hours each day in the long run
