    What type of credentials or verification should i ask for before hiring someone to do outsource SEO/Webmaster work for my site? Is it OK to ask for references?

    I think that you could ask for references. I see nothing wrong with this. If they have a problem giving you a reference, then you may not want to hire them.
    Here are some other things you may want to ask them for:

    • How much experience they have with SEO.
      What forums they have all worked on or had experience with.
      Ask if they can provide you with some samples of work they have done.

    I agree that in online work it is the reference that matters and not the resume. Take note that the resume can always be forged to make it appear impressive but they cannot fake the reference. My take on hiring a freelancer for an outsourced work is to ask for the previous jobs that he accomplished that pertains to the particular job that you are offering. Or maybe you can hire him on a probationary basis of 3 days or 1 week.

    I think a resume is important necessarily. So you will know the work experience and the level of education and knowledge of your candidate
