This day in age, everyone is getting on social media to post something that they are excited to share. Of course, you have those people who just share everything like the weather, they saw a blue car pass their house or the sun rose in the east and set in the west.... again. This discussion will cover why everyone should have their own website up and running, even just a blog if that's what you want to do, in order to keep the world turning (not really).
Running your own website or blog can be extremely beneficial when you're trying to get a new job, you want to share images with friends and family or you're simply trying to make a new revenue stream so you don't have to worry about bills.
I usually encourage all of my friends and family to set up a blog or website of their own so they can become a presence online, other than their social media profiles. There are many reasons for doing this, and here they are:
You don't own your social media profiles
Many people around the world, probably 99% of them, will say something along the lines of "My facebook profile" or "my profiles online" and they think that they own the few pages of content on the billion dollar websites, but they don't!
So many people put everything they can think of on their social media profiles and that usually comes back to bite them in the butt later on. Some people will eventually "Delete" their profiles but all they are really doing is ghosting them. They are not deleted because when the person does decide to come back, they just reactivate their account and BAM!!!! all their photos and settings are back lol.
Not owning the site you publish all of your information on is like giving your credit cards to someone you don't know, but you trust at the same time. You're giving away the rights for people to use your photos, and some people won't even ask while they use them. To prevent this, you can always set up your own blog or website and have a privacy filter in order to give others access when you want. But that's too much work and you don't care about your photos being used? Well, you'll care when it does happen to you and someone tries to make a profile using your information lol.
You can land more jobs
More and more employers are going to social media to check up on their employees and potential hires to make sure they have a good team under their roof. Having a team that is constantly partying and binge drinking, then coming into work, won't be a good thing because performance expectations will be high but the actual performance will be low due to hangovers and no one is motivated to get the job done because they want to go out at night.
A lot of applications now have a "website" field where people usually just input their Facebook profile URL. Did you know you can actually set up a website that makes you look amazing and then add it to the "website" field? Yup, you don't just have to add your social media profiles lol. You can make the website portray you as a saint within your industry and the employer will definitely be calling you back 
Building a Brand
This is more for people who want to get into fashion, modeling, acting, etc. If you have a headshot, you're the person this pertains to.
Building a brand around yourself is no easy thing to do. Sure, you can build profiles on other websites that will eventually help you out along the way, or you could build your own website that focuses on everything you've ever done in your industry. Think of this as a sort of resume online, but with fancy pictures to entice someone to give you a call for your next big movie roll
Protect Your Name Online
This is why I usually encourage everyone to build a website for themselves, to protect their own name online. I've searched up my own name and couldn't find anything dirty because I control the domains associated with my name! lol
Protecting your name online isn't just going to websites and asking them to remove a page about you, even though that's part of online reputation management. You will need to take it a step further, and this might be all you need and set up a website with the domain name being your actual name. If you have a shortened name like "Tom" while your legal name is "Thomas" you might want to pick up the domains Tom(LastName).com and Thomas(LastName).com just to be safe. You can always redirect one of them to the other and build one website instead of two
In Conclusion
These are just a few reasons people should be running a website for themselves. Either to protect your own name, to increase your callbacks or to land a specific job looking fancier than someone who adds their facebook profile URL to a job application. You never know how far a single website can take you in terms of being successful in life, so why not try it out? Don't worry about pricing either, you can start super basic and have a free Wordpress theme on a $4 a month hosting plan if you wanted to lol
