    My job as an SEO is to make you more money, not get every single keyword ranked #1

    When people come to my company and want to hire me, as well as my team, for search engine optimization they always rank their success based on where they land in the search engines.  When a client works with me, I try to get them in the mindset of increased sales equals success, not increased rankings to #1.  I say this because your end game goal is to increase your sales and be successful, not to get every single one of your keywords to number 1.

    Of course it would be nice to get your entire list of keywords to rank #1 in all of the search engines, but that just isn't realistic.  I've actually worked with clients who tried to get their money back after I increased their rankings to #2 and #3 for very competitive keywords and was told the client was making an additional $300+ a day because of it, but they were still unhappy.  They were unhappy because they assumed that since they're paying an SEO company, they should be guaranteed #1 rankings for all their keywords.  It didn't really matter that in the contract it said we will do our best to get them to #1 for as many keywords, but there was no guarantee that we could lol.

    In this discussion I'm going to go over what you should look for, in terms of results, when hiring an SEO company.


    Increased Rankings
    Yes, higher rankings are definitely something you should look for.  I know that I touched on how they aren't the main thing you should focus on, but they are important.  Without an increase in you search engine rankings you won't see much of an increase in your organic traffic, if any at all. 

    You will need an increase in rankings in order to have a better ROI, it's as simple as that.  If you have a PPC or social media campaign up and running, that's great, but it doesn't help your SEO campaign a single bit.  If you're hiring an SEO company to increase your rankings and bring in more sales, they should be doing just that.

    Increase Brand Recognition
    A good SEO company will also run a sort of branding campaign, that is of course you're not paying pennies for something you think should rank you #1 for a competitive keyword lol.  A good SEO company will cost a decent amount, between $1,000 and $10,000 a month, and they will more than likely help you recover that investment within the first year.

    A branding campaign along side your backlink campaign is what most websites need.  You will be publishing content and linking back to your own website as well as getting other links on high authority websites in order to increase your rankings.  Doing both of these is like a one two punch which knocks out your competition. 

    Increased Sales
    This is what you need to really focus on when it comes to SEO, not necessarily your rankings.  Sure you want your rankings to spike and bring in all the traffic, but if you're not getting the sales coming in, it's pointless to be doing what you're doing. 

    I like to do an assessment of a lot of my bigger ticket clients before we start, 3 months in, 6 months in and 12 months in just to see the increase in organic traffic and sales.  You'd be shocked, but 95% of the time we increase the clients sales exponentially within a year and they are making much more money than what they invested in our services My job as an SEO is to make you more money, not get every single keyword ranked #1  This again is a result of hiring an SEO company for more money and not a $100 a month.



    In Conclusion:
    When you're hiring an SEO company, you need to watch your sales more closely and not necessarily your rankings for every keyword.  You could be tracking the wrong keywords and getting discouraged when they don't get passed page 3, but the ones that are bringing in the sales are ranked #1 and you're unaware they're your golden nuggets. 

    One client I had about 3 years ago would complain all the time that his website was only on page 2 for a keyword that was searched 300,000 times a month.  Now he was still getting a decent amount of traffic and sales from this, but he thought he should be #1 for everything.  What he wasn't aware of is that we also had him ranked between #1 and #3 for low competition to medium competition keywords which were bringing in a steady stream of new clients each day.  We showed him this and he never complained again lol My job as an SEO is to make you more money, not get every single keyword ranked #1  So when you're hiring a good SEO company, they will know what to target, and you shouldn't get too upset because of an assumption My job as an SEO is to make you more money, not get every single keyword ranked #1

    I think selling SEO service is kind of hard. You have to convince the buyer that not every thing that you do leads to sales. Also not everything is about the ranking. And that's where the SEO service investment is more or less skewed. I mean why would buyer would invest into SEO unless you bring some tangible results. But then again the way SEO works It's reasonable to say that SEO does take time to convert. And on that note people have to realize what they can and can't do in such case as well. So for each one of us things could be different as well. I'd say it is all about ROI for both buyer and the seller.

    SEO service is definitely hard. Different people just have such different expectations but sadly, many of them are not realistic at all. So, before you even accept the job I believe that it's very important that you fully explain to the client what he/she can expect so there won't be any disappointments or arguing at the end.

    But yeah, SEO and rank showing doesn't happen instantly and some aren't patient enough. Your main goal should be increasing your traffic and sales and not necessarily just be stuck on that number one rank.

    I used to do the link building on forums for clients. And despite doing this for low cost. They were like why they don't see the result. I used to question them back. I do the job. Rest is upto google algorithm. So that is another way I said them that the algorithm and the result is not on my side. I do the work as assistance type. That's why I don't do the SEO type gigs anymore.

    That is also my apprehension with the potential clients because SEO work is a new kind of task that clients may be wary especially when the results couldn’t be seen at once. I have been learning SEO methods exclusively in this site and I plan to work as a freelance SEO specialist someday. Maybe I also need to learn the marketing techniques and the spiels for negotiations because it is not easy to get a project for SEO work.

    Convincing people that your service works. And that it has some really good service for them to pay and get results. I think that is what needs to be understood. I have not much spent time learning about the customer patterns. But that is something I'd be needing if you ask me. It'd be reasonable to know about that.

    Many people believe that when you are ranked #1 or appear in the top search results, you will get volume traffic. It is true that when you are ranked high on search engines, you are likely to get better traffic. The ultimate motive of getting traffic is driving sales. You don't make money from traffic, you make money from sales. A good position on Search engine ranking can help you drive traffic, however, it does not guarantee sales. In order to increase sales, you need products and services that are in high demand. Your website design and loading speed also affect how people interact on your website. If the website has poor design and is very slow, it is very unlikely that the visitors will buy products and services.

    To be honest it's not true either. Often the higher ranking is something people also avoid to click on. Lot of sites who rank top not necessarily makes a lot of money. Then again this is very complex data science problem. Where people behave randomly. So SEO can't always solve this problem. You have put forth a very good problem. I am sure many SEO companies struggle to solve that.

    Getting highly ranked even up to the first page of Google and other search engines is the most necessary search engine optimization task to perform online. Without achieving this, there's nothing like making money online. When the SEO is done efficiently, you are potentially good enough to earn revenue anywhere in the world. You can then monetize your website so far you have all resources at your own disposal.

    I don't even care about keywords ranking like sales and conversion, ranking on 1st on the search engine wouldn't make much sense to me if I'm not seeing the needed effect which is sales and conversion.So yes, you should be focusing more on driving traffic, conversion, and sales not the keywords.

    I guess increased SEO ranking leads to increased traffic which gives you the earnings as a net result. That’s why the goal of website owners is to gain traffic, much of it is better hence they branch out to other means of obtaining traffic like SEO. When the website is fully optimized, it has a good chance to be in the good position in the search engine list that can give the website a good number of new traffic.

    I see what you are saying. I think that most people who are not in the SEO world misunderstand SEO. I think also that many people who hire SEO freelancers give them the wrong parameters. What is the use of being ranked on the 1st page if you don't get any sales. I agree that if you are getting sales it should not matter what page you are ranked on. Part of the job description you should give your freelancer is the minimum nos of sales that should result from their SEO tactics.
