Why didn't Google Plus work?

I've always wondered this. Google Plus has never really been popular with anyone with people tending to prefer Facebook and Twitter whilst professionals tend to favour LinkedIn. Considering that Google is the largest search engine out there and favoured by most computer users, why did their social network not work out? I mean, I'm sure there are several people out there that still use Google Plus but compared to the user bases of Facebook and Google Plus, it is tiny. Did they not market the social network properly? Or is it just that new entrants to the social network market cannot do well?

What Facebook set out to do they accomplished. What Google set out to do they accomplished. When Google created its social media network, it was to offer social media users “alternatives”. They have accomplished that. Will they ever have the number of users that Facebook has? I doubt it. But is that really their business goal? I doubt it. However, your question “Why didn't Google Plus work?” confuses me. I use it. Works for me. I use Facebook and Twitter too. Why? Different audiences. Most folks are on Facebook. Believe it or not, some users prefer Google Plus. Some people only like to tweet on Twitter. I have accounts on each network to reach as many people as I can.

I believe that they aspired to make a social media like Facebook. Since they have similar platforms with slightly different and more complicated interfaces, people have stuck to Facebook in that there are already many users. I have tried out Google Plus and I see that in every community, it feels like people are just advertising their blogs or Youtube channels. There are few people who are active on the site as far as I know. Facebook just did a better job in terms of providing social media needs.

I would have to agree. The problem is they do not differentiate themselves well enough or have any fantastic features to compete with Facebook. Facebook users do not want to make the shift so Google+ needs to appeal in a different way instead of being sort of a Facebook clone. That was more than enough to make it become a failure for Google.

To me, it looks like Google+ is just waiting for the right time to attack. Facebook is a giant that is so difficult to compete with so Google+ is not forcing the issue. Maybe it has a timeline to follow that several years will be the preparation period. I remember some months back when a co-writer told me that Google+ has a scheme of sharing revenue which means your posts are paid (although understandably in miniscule amount). But I don't know if that pushed through because I was expecting Google+ to become popular with the scheme. Perhaps let's give Google+ the benefit of the doubt for now.

I have no clue and I've made a similar thread about why is Google+ so unpopular

For me personally, I just never saw anything new or interesting on Google+. Why would I stop using Facebook or Twitter and switch over if they don't bring something new and exciting? They should make you want to switch. I am quite disappointed by it since it's owned by Google - most of their projects, tools, and platforms are all extremely successful... all but Google+. It is getting beaten by other competition too hard.

It seems to me I've seen some similar questions around, and so far most of the people have agreed the same. Basically, Google + is very similar to Facebook, so usually in my case, when I find sites, socials, programs, that are pretty much the same, they get me bored. Is like using the same thing twice. So personally, I'm ok with just one of them, and to be honest, not very fan of Facebook either.

It entered an already dominated market and Google had one of the worst marketing schemes I've ever seen. They basically forced people to join Google+ by restricting access to sites like Youtube or Gmail. People were put off by that.

Google + is also popular. There are huge business and products are available on google+ social community. You have to become popular on Google+ by sharing important topics so that people can follow you. I know huge peoples are happy with Google+ and it works nice.

Google + does not have a big market share, however, I think it is already popular. While it has not been able to over throw facebook and twitter, more and more people are beginning to use Google +. Since there were already big players in the market, Google + seems to be taking time to reach the userbase like facebook and twitter, but it already has loyal followers.

I think it just failed to carve a niche for itself. It's too much like any other social media platform out there and didn't offer much more or something different. That, compiled with coming in late to the game, has created an image of it being just a copycat. This is just my theory of course and I know finding a solution is easier said than done, but if I were in charge of it I would probably try and focus on something else that I know the competition lacks, instead of just offering a similar platform.

Google Plus failed because Facebook does what Facebook does best. And sometimes you can't reinvent the wheel, especially when it's a limited market. Sure there are billions of internet users, but all these users want to be connected to one platform. And Google Plus couldn't offer anything better than Facebook was already doing. And that's not to say Facebook can't fail, but rather someone is going to have to reinvent the wheel and do something that Facebook is not doing. Which I highly doubt that I am going to see it in my lifetime.

It is really surprising when I read in this site that Google Plus was shutting down. I never imagined that a giant would surrender to a fight. But it is already a fact that Google Plus had lost the game against Facebook because it was not able to go astride with the popularity of Facebook. Maybe there is a missing ingredient in Google Plus and that is what they have to discover.
