Is AMP beneficial for SEO?

In case you didn't know, AMP is a Google project that helps load certain Google results faster.

Google has explicitly said that AMP doesn't help SEO. But AMP does help your site stand out in Google searches and it helps you page load faster. So maybe it helps SEO indirectly by making webpage load faster which in turn generates clicks?

I'd like to know your thoughts.

Well, let's just say Google says a lot of things that aren't really true. The AMP is a non-ranking factor is one of those untrue things.
I've tested the AMP project on multiple websites with multiple clients for a few months now, on virtually ALL of them I've noticed a clear increase in organic traffic.

I've had clear proof of old articles that didn't do so well before AMP as implemented but somehow exploded a few weeks after AMP was implemented.

Even if AMP isn't a direct ranking factor it is clearly an indirect one? How may you ask? Well think about this way: Organic CTR (click through rate) IS a ranking factor, before Google Rank Brain update and even after that. AMP results have a higher CTR compared to normal pages, therefore AMP results will slowly rise up in ranks as Google notices their higher than average CTR, understanding their importance to the keyword as well as the subject and niche.

So bottom line: AMP is a great technology that is constantly evolving and in my opinion is the future of websites. It also is a clear indirect ranking factor (at least for now) no matter what Google or anyone from Google says.

Thanks for the info! I was really wondering how it would help anyone if google said it does not help SEO. So, this would be a secondary thing to SEO, right?

Yes. Agree with what you said. But the explicit statement is true.
AMP does not help SEO. It really doesn't help!

Gee, that is surely a big statement to say that Google says many things that aren’t true. I have come across some discussions that were pointing to the Google Updates as not really being implemented fully and some observers speculate that those updates were meant to confuse the users especially the SEO specialists. Maybe I have to believe what you said although we also have to be careful in the evaluation of the statements of Google.

Google can say whatever they want about AMP, but they also say that they want their users to have the best experience possible. Having pages that are loading quicker than normal because they are working with the 'ol AMP will only make people have a better time on your website. And if Google notices that people are enjoying your websites more and more each week or month, don't you think that Google will change it's ways eventually and make AMP an element in the rankings?

Getting ahead of the curve now will only make your rankings sky rocket later on when an algorithm changes. Remember when websites were penalized for having a low quality backlink profile or caught in link farms? I do, and I benefited from the change because I did everything ethical and was rewarded with extremely high ranking boosts because of it lol

Stay ahead of the curve even if the work seems redundant right now

So far from what I have seen AMP is working well for people. But monetization seems to be an issue. People need to get paid for content. Just making site fast won't solve the issues. Without money everything is an expense. As you can see that AMP takes a lot of effort. And unless people understand it'd not be a good option to implement if monetization is limited to adsense.

It seems like AMP might work well for some people, and it may indeed allow google to load faster, but it doesn't seem like it might be that much help with SEO. I haven't used it so I am not sure how it would work for me. At least I know what it is now, so that is helpful.

To be honest, this is the first time that I have encountered the term AMP which is accelerated mobile pages. But from the trend that I see, mobile browsers are getting to be dominant over the computer browsers. In that sense, if the website is not optimized for mobile browsers then it may have a problem in converting the visitors to be regular readers. In my experience, I never come back to a website then my mobile browser is having difficulty in accessing the pages. There’s even one website where I couldn’t log in with my mobile browser.
