If you are new to blogging world and you want to start writing a blog then Blogspot (blogger.com) should be your first choice. It is hosted by google and gives a free subdomain. You don't need to do SEO work for it as it is search engine friendly. The only thing you have to do is to write the high-quality content.
I started my career with this platform and now I have 2 blogs with main domain and paid host.

I think I started off blogging with Blogger back in the day! I started a blog about blogging seeing as I was learning to blog. I already knew a bit about it from my time online before that. Well, what's there to know about blogging? It is what it says it is really. But it's also so much more than that as I came to discover over the years! :)
One other thing I learned about blogging is that unless it's monetized, it doesn't really matter how many large amounts of readers, followers or subscribers it has, it's not really going to be productive or beneficial to you in the long run. Sure! It's good to have people reading your blog! To get the message out there about things, share your knowledge in things, spark up conversations, opportunities for networking etc. But you need to make something from it to help pay for it and your time that you spend upon on. I mean, well you don't have to pay for a Blogger blog, but you should still be rewarded in some way for all that. And they can pull the plug on you at any time so it's so much better to convert to your own self hosted blog using a better, more dedicated blogging software and CMS like WordPress IMHO. :)
Blogger is great for newbie bloggers to get into the swing of things. But WordPress is more for the boys that have realised that their site needs to be able to do a lot more things that you just can't do with Blogger.
But of course this discussion is about free blogging platforms. And there are quite a lot of them! Some small, some big. And they all have their own pros and cons. You just really have to pick one of them. But I still prefer to go my own domain / CMS route. :)

1. You can add a custom domain. Meaning you can buy a .com; .net; .info or whatever you want and gain free hosting forever while using the same of Blogger's awsome platform as a management interface. You can ask more of this really, it has everything you need: like access to robots.txt, the ability to set redirects 301 as you please, custom meta descriptions and so on.
2. You are using Google's service, meaning you have a slight advantage in ranking and organic traffic. This is true, I've tested it myself. The same content published both on Blogger and wordpress.com. The Blogger based content in average manages to rank higher compared with the free wordpress.com content.
Sure, there are other free blogging services out there like I said, wordpress.com; weebly; medium and Wix - all of them great, but for me and a lot of other folks, Blogger remains our best choice.
