I guess you have the logic to follow the Twitter users but you have to be somewhat selective because it is not good to follow everyone. Check if the user has a lot of following before you join the bandwagon because if the user has no followers to speak of then it is like going inside an obscure website. But to get a thousand followers in that style will take you maybe 1 year at the minimum.

Avoid using all those exchange sites that get you twitter followers by following other people. All those accounts will likely be fake accounts created just so they could earn points or coins in which they can use on other things. Like selling twitter followers, tweets etc. The only way to get free twitter followers is to use twitter properly and follow people in your industry so they follow you back. Tweet and retweet their stuff and mention them and use #hashtag. Follow them and follow their followers, people will reciprocate and follow back. It takes time and lots of engagement but if you're dedicated you can really grow your account to big levels and have REAL followers that will actually see your tweets and engage with them. It takes more time and more work but the end results are so much better and you wont be jeopardizing your account. It's against twitter's TOS to engage in activities like that or purchase followers, retweets etc. They want you to do it the real way otherwise it just creates a crappy experience for all twitter users, bogs down the system and backfires on you in the end anyway. Think about it.

Posting tweets regularly can give you the exposure. But I guess it is the following that you do which can give you a follow back. Also, if your tweets are interesting then the other users may be interested in you and the tendency is to follow you. But what’s more important for me is the topic or subject that you tweet about. Avoid tweeting about politics and religion for it may backfire on you.
