Meta description is one of the crucial or major factor in onpage search engine optimization. Meta description content should be around 135 to 160 characters. It may contain structured content and should match the page or post content. Also make sure you are adding unique meta description to each post and page. It should include the main targeted keyword of the post or page. Include a call to action like "Learn more".

When you don't have meta description, search engines will show the first few lines from your post, however, if you have meta description, search engines will show your meta description in SERP. If the meta description is interesting and makes the internet searcher know more on the topic, he will visit the link. Therefore, it is very important to have meta description. When you are writing meta description, make is like a teaser. A teaser is a short intro that makes the reader know more.

It looks like the meta description is another way of enhancing the search engine capability of the web page. I perceive the meta description as the description of the video on Youtube where you state what the video is all about. In meta description, the same thing applies that you state what exactly is the content of the web page about. With a good description that you place in the meta tag, it can probably give your web page a better ranking with the search engines.
