Building links as a professional SEO consultant

I recently found this site and i am working as an SEO consultant.

My practice is optimise website landing pages then build links with guest posting on other blogs. I would like to hear from other people on what they have found with the recent google updates.

These are the issues i am finding:

Building links for a keyword, though you cant use the same keyword over and over again you have to use variations, though in saying this how will you know you will rank for your targeted keyword.
I see many services here for proved rankings on link pyramids, social links, blog comments though i am to scared to try them as i would not want to risk being dropped for bad links. How do you choose which offer is safe? I am willing to spend $5 for a service though everyone is offering the same thing, how can you be sure which service is safe?

Build buffer sites or Web2.0's and pay for a $5 service to test them out. You won't get as big of a boost, but it's a much safer way to run your SEO campaign for long term results. If you end up getting a penalty because of the service, it usually just hits the buffer website and not your money site, which is really nice. There have been occasions where someone gets a penalty to their money site by doing this method, but they build 1,000,000 buffer sites over night and linked them all with tiered links, then complained that the method doesn't work lol.

Play it safe.
User Buffer sites/pages.
Link your buffers.
Watch your rankings.

I like that line that says you cannot use the same keyword over and over again because that is like stuffing the keyword? My take on keywords is not really the uniqueness of the probability of getting hits. I want my keywords to be directly relevant to the post or the main content of the webpage. When we did a search using a keyword just for testing, I have seen the potency of the keyword that the backlink appears on the search list.
