    Cross linking is literally what the words mean - linking two sites together or establishing a link between them. These two sites don't have to be owned by the same person or anything like that. That doesn't matter.

    You have different type of cross linking; inbound and reciprocal links and both are very valuable in SEO. Cross linking has a lot of functions and benefits. That's why it's important; one such function is to increase the traffic/popularity/rank in the search engine.

    From what I understand in another discussion, cross linking is a trick to share the links of the sites. It’s like Site A will contain the link for Site B and that Site B will contain the link of Site A. It is a technique similar to the adage “scratch my back and I will scratch yours.” Think if there are 10 sites that will have cross links with each other then one site will have 9 backlinks to speak of. However a backlink needs to be high quality and most cross linking does not have that quality.
