If you know what are you doing when it comes to automated link building, I'd say probably both of them.

I prefer manual link building, you get way less backlinks but they are usually higher in quality compared with automated backlinks.

If what they say is true that a backlink can be bad when it is posted on a weak site then there is a risk when your link building is automated unless there is a specific function on where to post the links. If you have the time then I guess the best way to build your backlinks is the manual way for you can select the site and you probably know the good sites where to post your backlinks.

All software made by human so I believe that manual link building is better than automated.

that manual link building is better than automated, but if you can manage it more better.

I suppose if you have one money site you could do it all manually but there is really no way to scale without automation.

The key to automation is to be smart about it, just doing random blasts to your money site is not what you should be doing but you can use automation to save yourself a lot of time and money. There is really no difference between links built by a bot and links built manually. Do you really think that Google can look at a web 2.0 page or Bookmark and tell how it was made?

Now crappy automation can be a problem but automation itself is not the problem it is the person using it.

I honestly can not think of a more mind numbingly boring activity than building links manually, if that is what it took to make this work I would be doing something else.

I think software should help you build links not make them for you.

You should never use any tool that builds links automatically. It will all come crashing down on you eventually when you get found out. Google is much smarter at knowing what a manually built link is over the links that are built by a machine. Even if you don't think so, eventually patterns start forming and these patterns are a big footprint to search engines. Trust me, Google spend millions on getting this right they know so much about how automatic link building tools work now and can identify their flaws and if that's something you've done on your main site then that could result in a penalty for your site. Of course it would depend on what links you were building and why you was building them for.

If they were something like your tier 3's or tier 4's of some sort and the method you was using wasn't spammy other than the fact you're not manually posting it yourself such as not flooding a forum with links or some ones social profile or something then that would be a different story buy again, that will eventually create a pattern and leave a footprint and can have a bit of bad effect. The bad effect being the penalty that's applied to your site should that come under review by them following a manual review or something. All it takes is one bad report to be sent and it can trigger all sorts of things if you're doing stuff like that.

But what am I saying? This is 2017 not not 2005! That sort of link building is largely frowned upon now and doesn't need to be done anyway! You can get good SERP ranking by doing good SEO on a site you know. By doing white hat SEO by an SEO professional. Just check out some of the SEO link building services for sale in the SEOClerks Marketplace and you can achieve those good rankings without using a single tool or app in the process! This will be much better for your website and its credibility in the search engines.

Based on the comments above, it is better to use manual link building than automated link building for purposes of quality. I had read in one discussion that if you have excessive backlinks in low quality websites then you may be violating a Google policy. And the advice is to choose the website where you post your backlink. Quality backlinks are posted on popular website which gets a lot of traffic.
