    My website speed is crazy slow and I got such a technical report... help?

    I am so frustrated about my website speed and I don't know where to start so I got a free report online from a website called GT Metrix and I have NO idea what to do with that information.

    I really get so irritated, all I want is for my website to work fast and it is just a blog.

    Where do I start and what do I do or should I just try and get a service here? I am just so scared of giving anyone access to my website!

    Please can anyone advise?

    That is really interesting because i am currently thinking about hosting websites from my home. You are on a shared server and unfortunately others have websites being run of that same server. What does that mean exactly? the amount of traffic your getting probably doesn't change much but if other websites on that same server are getting slammed that means your website will run slower than normal. The only real option is to get a dedicated server but if your not making enough money then its not worth it. You don't need to give anyone access to your website because it has nothing to do with the website itself rather the server its being run on. I hope this helped you out and i also hope that you get the situation resolved.

    It is on my sister's server? I am not sure that is the problem here Jkeyz2 because my website has been on her server since 2012 and I haven't always had this problem.

    I have another 2 websites which are hosted at Wealthy Affiliate so that is a shared server but those websites aren't slow at all.

    Well then that is a different issue is her network set up to give that machine priority? is it hard wired rather than wireless? Maybe its time to update the server? I mean it could be a bunch of reason you kind of have to go through them one by one to figure out whats going on for sure.

    Oh I don't know any of those anwers! My website speed is crazy slow and I got such a technical report... help? I am like not very clued up when it comes to hosting but she has a web development company so I sincerely doubt she would mess me around with hosting.It has just come to a stage where I want to manage my own things and it is hard taking over not knowing exactly what has been done with my website.

    My other websites I built myself on Wordpress from scratch so I know what I have done... if that makes sense. I am just so scared to touch anything!

    LOL well it seems everyone agrees it is my hosting! Sorry Jkeyz2, I really don't have a clue and that is why I have to ask.

    I have also contacted a freelancer here for help with my problems and maybe he can also shed some light on this for me and give me some extra help.

    What type of hosting are you using for your websites Lynne? Maybe it's time to upgrade, and to choose another one hosting company, if you see that your actual hosting it's not powerful enough to handle your website.

    Also are you using any CDN-s like Cloudflare to your website, as they will improve your website capability/speed a lot, depends on the website type but yeah, 'Content Delivery Network' is the key to boost up your server performance.

    Re-scan your website with gmetrix, and check low score grades, because they will tell you exactly who is causing loading problems.

    Oh my gosh Procoder. I don't know what CDN-s is... I have never heard of Cloudflare in my life. I will go and research that and have a look at that, thank you!

    It sounds like you need a better hosting plan Lynne! A dedicated hosting plan and not a shared hosting plan. When you're on a shared hosting plan, you're sharing that servers resources and bandwidth with other sites on that server. If those other sites are using a lot of resources / traffic then your site will suffer because of that.

    You can get great dedicated hosting plans for a very reasonable price these days. I'm with StableHost.com on a dedicated hosting plan and only pay around $15 a month for it. But I don't have a lot of sites on it and and don't need a massive plan. But I have a dedicated IP, Cpanel and amazing, excellent support. But you can find a similar web host like this today for around the same price for dedicated hosting.

    You say your website is hosted on your sisters hosting plan. And it's been fine since 2012. But by the sounds of it, that hosting plan is now hosting a lot more sites than it used to and you're sharing the resources/bandwidth with those other sites as well.

    You can find out quite easily how many other sites are on that server by using a reverse IP lookup too.

    Such as

    http://www.ipfingerprints.com/reverseip.php
    http://reverseip.domaintools.com/

    Just enter your domain name or your domain's IP address (Server IP) and it will tell you how many sites are using it.
    You can also search the IP in Google "in quotes" and if there is a lot it will show although this method is not full proof.
    You could also open a support ticket with your host as well and ask them these questions and they should tell you.

    To get your sites IP address you can find it in your hosting accounts panel.
    Or just use one of these get website IP tools.

    Or use your own     Command Line Ping.

    Just type ping www.yourwebsite.com and it will show you the IP address for it.

    I really think it's all to do with the server you are on rather than your actual websites.
    Your site are probably already fairly optimized if you're using WordPress.
    So it's more down to the speed of the server your site is being hosted on.
    You can also set up premium DNS and use a CDN to speed up your site as well.

    Thanks Mike. I checked and there are 50 odd websites on this hosting. Is that a lot? I have no idea.

    Thank you for all these practical tips. I guess I am wrong, maybe part of the problem is the shared hosting!

    If I get my own hosting and it speeds my website up considerably then it will be well worth the $15 a month! Thank you!

    It depends on how much RAM/CPU and B/W (bandwidth) is allocated to that specific server. And it also depends on how much RAM/CPU (resources) and B/W is being used by each. If they are only small sites that aren't getting a lot of traffic then they probably wont eat up much of that. But if they are fairly big sites and all are getting a lot of traffic then the more they will eat into the allocated share. Yeah look for a dedicated hosting plan Lynne. You'll be thankful for it in the long run!
