Do people at Google review your spam backlinks manually?

I always wonder, do the people that work at Google count and review your backlinks manually or does a special algorithm and software does it automatically? What if you build a bunch of spammy backlinks? How can a software be sure and make a difference?

John Mueller from Google answered this question and apparently all your website's backlinks that are marked as spammed or suspended to be spam and reviewed MANUALLY by Google employees.

Google apparently employs thousands worldwide, and I'm sure they have enough funding to pay their employees to manually review spam backlinks. They probably have teams dedicated to backlink quality. Could you image going through thousands to millions of suspicious spam backlinks? I think it's great that they do this manually, and it's not some bot detecting the spam, that could get a little worrisome.

Interesting. I was just reading something on a BHW thread about PBN's about how Google has only so much man power and how their PBN's fly under the radar. Sometimes for years and go undetected by Google because they're done so well and it would take a manual review to get them noticed and subsequently penalized. But there are so many sites in their PBN and they're not all connected either so they can only ever see so many of them and they're always adding to it. So for every 10 sites they penalize, the blackhats just add another 10 to it.

But they was saying how there's no software bot or anything that's used in the process. They literally check the top 10 sites ranking for the most competitive and popular search volume keywords and see how the sites that are ranking top, are ranking top. And with so many other links to take into consideration. Both built and naturally earned organic links, it's really hard for them to see if they're using a PBN or not and of course, they can't just whack a penalty on that site based on a whim, they need empirical evidence else they could upset the wrong people.

I was wondering about this myself. So the algorithm and software would make Google employees aware of a possible problem and then employees would go and have a look to manually check the links? I think this is best checked by people and not software.

It is interesting also to hear what Mike says about PBN's and them being checked manually, I was wondering about this. I mean if I network with people in my niche and get to know all the people in the top and we mention each other on our websites every now and then how can Google then decide whether it is friendly linking to other relevant people in my niche or a blog network?

Mike is right, they would need some big time evidence.

I have come across so many discussions about excessive backlinks which is tantamount to spamming. But I am also wondering how Google and other search engines find out about those excessive backlinks? Let’s say I have posted my backlink on one site a hundred times. Will Google find out about that 100 backlinks on that site? If ever, how will Google find out about it?
