Has Facebook Followed Suit of Twitter and Disabled Showing Social Shares Count?

So I've been checking every social signal checker I know of and can find, and every single one of them say the same thing. None of them are showing the share count of Facebook shares, likes, comments etc.

Try using any social signal checker online to check how many social signals, shares, likes you have and nothing will show for Facebook?

Twitter disabled showing their share count of tweets and things a while back. Have Facebook now followed suit and are doing the same thing?

The only thing that's still showing is Google+ 1's.

I've searched around and all I can find about it is this post on the Inc site.

Not having the count made many third party button suites lopsided, and made Twitter stand out in a negative way. What they didn't know at the time was that they were starting a trend. This trend continues today with the loss of access to the share_count data for Facebook. Facebook has not yet made an announcement about the loss of this data. Or have they?

Is this the end of Facebook share count?

Rendering all those social signal checker sites, obsolete?

Oh damn, I didn't hear about this until just now Has Facebook Followed Suit of Twitter and Disabled Showing Social Shares Count? I guess I'm going to have to do a bit of researching now to see if this is just a temporary thing due to new coding and updates or if they are pushing this as a forever type of thing.

I hope it's not a forever type of thing because that would mean a lot of people will lose their businesses, or a website at least, and not have that revenue stream helping them out.

I actually just put up a new website and I was having a problem with the facebook social shares showing up and maybe this is why. It's either that or I'm just bad at putting in the code to show it lol Has Facebook Followed Suit of Twitter and Disabled Showing Social Shares Count?

What would be the reasoning to take this away? Maybe facebook is tired of the inflation of likes, shares and fake comments in order to show a page, picture, profile are more popular than they should be? If that's the case, I think it's a smart move because now people won't focus on a number and it will reduce the fake statistics that show up on a profile. I know I've bought plenty of likes, shares, and comments that were fake for my websites facebook pages just to show they are more popular than they really are at the beginning. Becaus you know, who wants to start from scratch? lol Has Facebook Followed Suit of Twitter and Disabled Showing Social Shares Count?

Yeah, I discovered it last night when checking a clients signals count for a YouTube video. It wouldn't show the Facebook shares count (likes, shares + comments). I tried a couple other sites thinking perhaps it was just a glitch on that site but all were saying it. So I left it thinking perhaps it's just a temporary FB glitch or something. But on checking again today still not showing shares count. So done a big of digging around and that's what I found. Honestly I think this is so new that nobody really knows about it yet and it's only a matter of time Raz before we start seeing people coming on here asking how to check their social signals! LOL

And I guess it could put some people out of business. Particularly perhaps those selling FB signals, shares etc. Because how can they know if they were added or not? You can check on Facebook because each FB post shows you how many comments, shares, likes it's got. But what about something like a YouTube video or something else that doesn't show the share_count? How will they know if the shares have actually been added or not? The same would apply for your website too, not your coding fault - all down to Facebook.

All these social signal checker scripts do is access the share_count API of Facebook. So they'll have to find another way around that now I guess otherwise those sites are only good for showing other stuff (Facebook and Twitter not included). I'd imagine other places follow suit now as well such as Google+ and LinkedIn etc.

And yes, even celebs have purchased fans and likes and things to boost their social media pages to start with. Large numbers attract large numbers. Nobody wants to really follow someone on Twitter if they only have 3 followers. But 300k followers makes you look more interesting and worth following. It's a herd mentality type of thing. People aren't really people. They're sheeple. Has Facebook Followed Suit of Twitter and Disabled Showing Social Shares Count?

Oh my gosh Mike, yes imagine how all those social count websites must be feeling right now! I would hate to be an owner of one of those at this moment.

That really sucks because I love checking my social signals on social count websites.

Surely this will also be a pain in the ass now for buyers and sellers here of social shares? How will this be checked?

I can see the sense in Facebook making this move though, it will reduce the need for paid services and fake stats wouldn't it?

Update: I have discovered a way to check your current Facebook signals (likes/shares+comments). I say I but it was actually elgerente that told me about this. So all props must go to him. Although I think I already knew about this myself but must have forgotten about it.

Anyway, you can still check your Facebook signals manually by using their Graph tool. And there's two ways of doing it.

Method 1: For checking Shares and Comments count
You can check the number under share_count using this URL
http://graph.facebook.com/?ids=YOUR-URL
Replace YOUR-URL with your actual URL.
Example: https://graph.facebook.com/?ids=https://www.facebook.com

Method 2: for checking Likes count
You can check the number shown next to the like button.
https://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=YOUR-URL
Again, replacing YOUR-URL with your actual URL.
Example: https://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=https://www.facebook.com
For X>1,000 it shows 1.2K, 26K, 3.6M, so not able to see exact count of likes. Just a number rounded off to the nearest zero.

I'd imagine that the social signal check scripts adapt to these changes by Facebook of disabling access to the share_count API eventually. But for now, this is a work-around you can use to check how many shares+comments and likes count.

Hope you find it useful!

Props and +1 to elgerente for the heads up!

Thanks for sharing that Mike, I am sure there are loads of sellers now not knowing how to provide proof to their customers that they have completed social share jobs.

I can just imagine that this has caused countless problems all over.

I think is a great move if you ask me. All this hysteria with social media signals really needs to die once and for all.
But I fear everyone will just find a way around this and nothing will change. What about social exchange websites, there surely will be the most affected out of this right?
