Write the reason you're deleting this FAQ
I am sure you are all aware about viral posts on social media and how useful they can be for some people, but is it really a good approach? One of my websites is in a particularly viral nice and some posts on the site can fetch 30,000 views, which looking from the outside is great but personally I think there is more to it than just traffic. So we have been using Reddit to get a lot of our traffic as our site is fantastically popular in a community like that. What we have found is that our posts have gained a lot of popularity, but a lot of the Reddit community is just scanning over the article and then going back to Reddit, instead of doing what I want and clicking on other articles. This has done a lot of good in one way because the traffic has been around 80% US, however the average session time and bounce rate have been horrific. From promoting on our Facebook page we have seen a lot less traffic but they are more interested in the site. They stay for longer, go onto the next article, come back later etc. So my question to all of you is, should I stay with this viral traffic, or should I forfeit the high numbers for more high-quality, returning visitors?

That probably means you need to work on your Call-to-Actions! There are two type of landing pages. There are those that are optimized for organic searchers that might have a lot of content on that page. A lot of content that takes a while to read through. And then there's landing pages that are optimized for social media that use Call-to-Actions in them. Are you sending your social media visitors to the right type of landing page? Are you making good use of Call-to-Actions in and throughout those landing pages? You need to experiment. You could try creating a landing page that doesn't have much content on it that has been optimized for your social media visitors. They don't have that much content on them but they do make use of very prominent Call-to-Actions such as links or banner images near the end that entice and ask them to click/visit that link. And you could use emotional words and things that pull at their heart strings. Find out problems those people are likely having and tell them how much of a problem it is and then provide them with the solution which they must click on the link/banner image etc to see that solution. Are you doing that?
I wrote a big list of the most popular and actionable Call-to-Actions a while back. Some of them you probably already know. But it's still a good thing to know and to make good use of in your landing pages if you want to see an improved CTR rate on your blog.
But as for if viral traffic is a good thing or not. Well, even if that traffic has a high bounce rate. That's still better than no traffic! All traffic you get will improve the other metrics of your site and that includes things like Alexa rank, mozRank, your sites DA etc etc. Even if a high percentage of them are leaving your site fast without taking any action on that site or clicking through to any other pages/posts etc on it.
So my answer to your question of should I stay with this viral traffic, or should I forfeit the high numbers for more high-quality, returning visitors? Is that yes, stick with it. But also, do go for and aim to get high quality returning visitors as well. It's better to have both and keep your traffic stats up. Besides, each visitor, even if they don't take any action, is still valuable from an eCPM point of view.
