Write the reason you're deleting this FAQ
I am just wondering what everyone else's experiences has been with adding tags for posts?
This is one of the good examples of those contradicting bits of advice I was given when I first started working online.
I starting writing my first blog post, knowing nothing about online marketing and saw the option for tags. I called the web developer that made my first website and asked what tags were all about and he said not to worry about them because they did nothing.
For 2 years I never touched tags. Then I joined an online marketing training platform and one of the training modules mentioned using tags and they said how it can help with SEO. I was told to always add my main keyword as the tag.
I went back through all my content, on 3 websites and added tags.
Guess what happened?
1. My bounce rate lowered, my readers were using tags to move around my website, a very marked difference
2. Some of my posts ranked higher for the tag then for the actual post!
So remember to ask more than one person for advice, I recommend asking right here where you can get a number of different people working in the field of online marketing.
I also recommend that you try it out for yourself and see how things work for you.

For me, I don't know, maybe I will, maybe I won't, it all depends on the results afterwards.. haha.
Well generally I like to apply things that I do. For instance, I never use tags on any articles, posts, or even just basic websites that utilize them. So if I don't use them I automatically think that no one else does either and is therefore old and obsolete. I think I have sort of a problem along those lines which I need to get away from.. lol
However, if you feel that it has actually helped your website, then by all means use them! :D For me, I don't know, maybe I will, maybe I won't, it all depends on the results afterwards.. haha.

Adding the right tags to each of your blog posts comes with several other benefits as well. One is the user experience as already mentioned but other than this, they help to improve the navigation and structure of your site. And they provide a great opportunity for search engines to which index and rank tags. There was a story a while back about a big site that got around 250k UV's p/m. And about 5% of his organic UV's came from his tag pages that the search engines had indexed.
But some people don't know how to properly use WP tags and even abuse them. Some people add too many tags to their posts or tag things with the same title of the post! Not good! When it comes to tagging in fact, less is more. So for something like that, you would tag it with a few tags while striking a good balance of things like "chicken" or "chicken recipes" or even "chinese chicken recipes" "top 10" that kind of thing. Then when you create another post on the same thing, you would use some of those same tags again.
You should properly optimize your tags for SEO though. Yoast for WordPress does a good job of this for you "out of the box". Tags (like categories) should be set to noindex. This will prevent those tags pages that are the same from being seen as duplicate contnet. However, Google announced way back in 2008 they will never penalize a WordPress site for having archive pages that publish and point to the same content with tags. The algorithm knows this and takes it into consideration. But even if you noindex your tag archives, Google can still choose to rank and display them in the SERPs. And for most cases it often ranks your tags more than it does your actual items. This is partly because they know that it links to a relevant/related source to what the searcher is after.
So basically, use them! That's why WordPress added them. WordPress never used to come with tags when it first released. They were added in later on like a lot of things it has now. Some people think that everything that it has was always like that but they wasn't. WordPress added tags for a reason. Because they are a very good way of "tagging" posts which your readers can use to find all the posts that have been tagged with that same tag. Search Engines also find them useful for crawling and indexing your site as well. Especially when you place your tags on the homepage of your blog or in blog categories because the most used tags appear the biggest. Letting them know what sorts of things your blog is mostly talking about. Mostly. Adding the right tags to each of your blog posts comes with several other benefits as well.
