    Does using a wordcloud in website help you rank better?

    I want to ask if using word cloud help in ranking as google love word clouds specially in pictures. Or, conversely does it actually hurt?

    Hi Sanfora. You mean a tag cloud right? For your WordPress tags. I'm a go with a yes on that. As for what you've said "google love word clouds specially in pictures". Google cannot see what is in a picture so how can it have love for it if, it doesn't know what's on it? Unless you mean something else by this but Google doesn't love or hate and when people say "Google loves" something they couldn't be further from the truth! Google is not a person with thoughts and feelings. It cannot "love" or "hate" anything. It can only follow the commands given to it. It can't look at a picture and think, oh I really love this picture because it's a picture of different words in a cloud. It doesn't work like that. And with regards to whether tag clouds can help or hurt your rankings, not really neither no. They are just an element on your site. They are the tags for your blogs posts. They are helpful to the readers of your blog and they are indexed by Google in Google too so can help from that perspective. But having them on your site, whether you use them on just the homepage or /blog category pages or all over your site, wont really have any effect (help or hinder) your rankings. Once again, it's your on-page content, site structure and off-page SEO (backlinks) that determine where you rank in the SERPS. Your tags wont really make one iota of difference when it comes to where you're ranking on their own.

    Keyword clouds are long dead in my opinion! And yes, having keyword clouds with tons of words can hurt your rankings and even penalize you. It's just a grotesque form of keyword stuffing, I'm amazed it still exists and is put into practice.

    Just think about this way: How does keyword clouds actually help a real user? If your answer is:"it doesn't really help the user" - then you should definitely remove them because Google will think in the same way.

    Also, I will need to see an actual example of how you are using word clouds in pictures? A print screen is sufficient.

    That's a good point but keyword clouds can still be beneficial to the user because the most used keywords appear the largest in that cloud letting them know what the most discussed keyword on that blog is. Sometimes that is useful and can increase your CTR. But proper placement of them is vital like only using on your homepage or your /blog homepage or on one of the category pages in the sidebar or something that sort of thing is good for those reasons but you're right in that people do use them nefariously and they can look unsightly to say the least.

    And yes I would like to see that example of what he means using word clouds in pictures too. I think he means if you create an image with a word cloud in it Google can see that but it can't so not sure and not sure of how this would even help a user on your site anyway. Or, he is actually talking about those word cloud images out there such as these ones or something...

    Those can be quite cool to look at and can be used in your blog posts and on social media etc. You can actually make these from your own current WP tags or even categories or both. But Google has no idea what's on them and wouldn't rank you for the words within them. Only the alt text and file name and EXIF data.

    Oh well I have never heard of wordcloud before? Mike I have some of these types of images in some of my posts though. Does that count?

    What do you mean by does it count Lynne? Images can't count. Calculators count. Count von Count counts.
