We all know that traffic is the main resource of any website. Traffic is like the blood of website. No traffic, no value for the website. So, to generate traffic, we know webmasters try to do many things. For example: SEO, social promotion, paid advertising etc. I know SEO is one of the best ways to generate traffic. But, it requires time, careful planning and investment.
On the other hand, as a free and quick way of generating traffic, many webmasters are using classified sites to attract targeted traffic. And many webmasters think, this is the best way to get quick results.
Do you think that classified sites can help to generate traffic by free ad posting?

I have spent quite a bit of effort in the past posting on classifieds sites and yes I got some traffic but I am not so sure that all the energy I put in was worthwhile for the amount of traffic I got. Maybe I was doing it wrong :)

That said you can use them to create some backlinks to your site. Albeit most of them will be nofollow and some links might not even be hyperlinked. However this is still good for your backlink portfolio as it's good to have a nice wide link diversity and even citation type links are counted by Google and some classified ad sites are considered high authority sites now as well. Craigslist, Backpage etc.
But your actual ad itself, the keywords used in the title, the description and images, tags etc come into play too and good use of them can help to increase how many views your ads get and the CTR of them. With more emphasis put on it containing something of value rather than just one line of text and your link. Whether it's a link to your site, or a shortened affiliate link. It's never really good practice to use affiliate links in classified ad site posts though as these will have a much higher chance and potential of being flagged and removed.
Still, some ad sites keep your ad up indefinitely and can go on to bring you in traffic and sales indefinitely from time to time too. It's not something you should devote all your time to, there are much better things you can do like forum posting and blog commenting/networking for building up traffic to your site from high traffic pages, sites, forums and blogs which you should be doing as well. But it's one of those things that the more you do, the more ROI you'll see from it. And something you have to keep doing to see that ROI come about. That's how I see it anyway and what my experience of using them is.
