How to rank a website in USA

Hi, I am new to SEO with a UK based site. I would like to know how to rank my site for the US search market or if it will only rank locally.

Hello. Most importantly is choosing the right domain.
Don't buy a co.uk and expect to rank better for USA then UK. So go for a .com domain with a hosting company from the USA, so you'll have US ips.
Also, if you want to rank for a certain region is can use the meta tags like: geo.position, geo.placename or geo.region. A hreflang tag my also help, ex: <link rel="alternate" href="http://example.com" hreflang="en-us" /> - it tells the search engine your content is English and targeted for the US.

Overall I think a .com with a US based host is enough. Search engines are smart, they're rank you appropriately. Good Luck.

What Cristian said is your best bet.

Using a .co.uk domain will almost guarantee you end up on the 10th page in the US

The hosting trick is pretty clever as well

Well considering US is the most dominant country when it comes to Internet searches you can just do normal SEO but there are some things that will help you along the way. The first is to choose not a country specific domain like .us .co.uk etc but stick with a .com but the TLD is not something that really matters that much. You can still own a .co.uk and rank your site in the US.

What really matters most is using the US spelling of words instead of the European version of words. The words you use and the spelling of them you use will play a large part in your rankings. For example; Color instead of colour. Or accessorize instead of accessorise etc etc.

And of course, who you webhost is, where they are located and the IP address they give you will play a role too. And of course, your backlinks, what countries those sites are in and what their IP addresses are. With the majority of them being US located.

And finally, one other thing which others haven't mentioned here. Is to set the geographical targeting options to US in your Webmaster Tools Geographical targeting options page. You will want to set this to literally target searchers in the US.

So to recap then in highlighted points how to rank in USA.

The TLD can play a role but isn't a major significant factor.
The words you use in your content should be the US version.
Your backlinks are from sites that are US located sites.
Your webhost and where your site is located and its IP address matters.
Setting US as the country to target in Webmaster Tools is important.

Hi retouchexpert1 Thanks for your question. I do agree with Cristian, if you want to do rank any website for any country targeted search engine, you have to register domain on that country. For example: you want to get search rank in USA, so you do not register domain from other country. You have to register from USA. Some of SEO expert use some technique by using meta tag or title. But most perfect is need to domain from targeted country and google or another search engine really looking for. I do not know is there other any method remains.

Your most of backlink will be from US IPs. That will help you to rank your site in US.

Hi that may work. And most of the SEO expert trying to make backlink such way. As targeted ranking, create backlinks from those targeted Ips. And most of the time it is not work, if your domain outside of that country. So, most importance is domain need to registration from targeted country. Still this is right way and working very much for getting country targeted search rank.

I agree with the comments above that having an IP from a US server is one good trick for your purpose. But the most potent is the social media. Find Facebook groups and Facebook pages that deal with anything about US like US Seniors or even American athletes. Make your presence be felt before posting and be sure that your promotional post about your site will not appear like spam.
