Have you discovered Steemit yet? The social networking site that pays you to contribute

Last night I came across an interesting article in my Newsreader app about a site called Steemit (steemit.com). The reason it made the news was because it has made a landmark payout of $1.3 million dollars to it's users and early significant contributors that are paid for posting high quality content to the site in a wide range of different subjects from politics to gardening, music & entertainment and more.

Steemit is a "decentralized social media platform" and has now been running for 3 months. They say that "more than $1.3 million worth of the Steem supply was distributed into the wallets of thousands of users across the world. From every corner, users have been drawn to Steemit because the system actually rewards thoughtful comments, unlike Reddit or Twitter. The community and the blockchain together power a system that gets better and better every day."

Half of the $1.3 million supply of Steem was distributed in Steem Dollars, which is basically a form of Steem worth roughly one US dollar, and half in Steem Power, a vesting currency that supercharges voting power via the platform.

One guy who posted an article 20 hours ago is apparently going to get paid $1,951.59 for it and that amount keeps going up the more people that comment on and upvote it.

You can create an account with Facebook or Twitter and then post unique articles to the site which other people can "upvote" and the more upvotes you get on your articles, the more you get paid.

I'm still trying to get my head around how Steem works but these videos should bring you up to speed about how the basics of Steem works and how you can use it to make money by posting high quality content on the site that other Steem users like.

No, I have no yet discovered Steemit.. well until now. I have a few concerns though, let me address them:
  • How exactly does the site earn revenue to pay out it's users for posting content
  • This business model already exists, how do they know it won't fail? This model usually does fail if they have no backup earnings
  • No advertisements? Hm..

Also, I'm very cautious about sites like these at first, because you can earn big, and then the next moment they are closing your doors and keeping your funds. What exactly helps them float? Has anyone registered yet?

Yes Everett, great points here. Where exactly does this money come from? It doesn't make sense to me, maybe I am dumb but if you don't know where the money is coming from there is usually a big problem with it!

I don't want to put any effort into something that might earn me $50 today but when I try and cash out... well the website disappears overnight. No thank you, this is not for me.

Well those are very good questions Everett! Exactly why I posted this as I'm still learning about it myself!

Regarding where the money comes from, I've been doing some digging and this is about the best thing I can find on it although it doesn't make perfect crystal sense at first and I still don't understand it.

I mean it's just so vague! They say "Steemit is a blockchain-based software network that creates Steem dollars, to be used as currency, from loans on the value of Steem digital assets. Steem digital assets represent the ownership of this software network and have value because they're useful and they are scarce."

And while that link does try to answer some of these questions, it raises more questions than it answers if you ask me!

I've registered, but I've not posted anything yet. I did ask your question on a post here and if someone answers it I'll let you know!

A blockchain-based software network creates Steem dollars, to be used as currency, from loans on the value of Steem digital assets. Steem digital assets represent the ownership of this software network and have value because they're useful and they are scarce.

From what I gathered they are hoping it will make money, and turn steemit into another cryptocurrency. Now I'm not even sure if that post about that user making over a thousand dollars is actually legitimate. I also think that the website is a scam in and of itself.

They are hoping to start a cryptocurrency basically, and decided they would do it via a social network. So they created steemit. This has already been done, and the business model is not sustainable. Perhaps the developers behind the website know what they are doing??

Yes I agree with you Everett, this looks like a complete scam to me. These scams love using these terms like crytocurrency but you know what? Cash is cash and if there is no cash coming in real money can't be paid out.

I don't want lots of "Steem digital assets", I want real money in my bank account! I've seen so many of these rubbish schemes because I have reviewed loads of them on one of my websites. I suppose I can add this to my list of rubbish to check out now.

Oh well at least its free right?

Guys it's not a scam. It is a legitimate incentivized cryptocurrency social media site that rewards you with its own currency (Steem dollars) which is a legitimate cryptocurrency itself just like any other cryptocurrency like bitcoin. The more content that's generated on the site, the more steem is generated as its tied directly into it. Users are paid half in "Steem Power" and half in "Steem Dollars" which are worth about 1 USD dollar and already accepted by cryptocurrency exchanges. You can also easily convert your earned Steem dollar to BC or Dogecoin dollar etc.

Currently, there are over 100 posts valued at $2000 worth of Steem, and the top 20 posts have an average payout of a combined $8,500 for posters and voters.

@Evererett here is a link to that specific post I was referring to that is currently at around $1400. What I've Learned Blogging Everyday for More Than A Year for No Money...and Why I'm Grateful For It. That same poster has some even bigger posts as well worth equally as much.

Steemit is completely decentralized and doesn't use the Bitcoin blockchain. Instead they created a new blockchain and that's what it's rewarding users with by participating on the site and making it awesome. For you guys, that shouldn't be a problem! Sounds interesting and confusing Have you discovered Steemit yet? The social networking site that pays you to contribute As i can see even their members are mainly confused with most of the things there, while some of those who get it early will probably make something out of it. But make what? Real steam or money, it's unknown to me yet, as i am still so confused Have you discovered Steemit yet? The social networking site that pays you to contribute

They want users to post, and generate a cryptocurrency. Apparently you can convert this currency into dollars and cash out. I'm not too sure about this, as they are basically trying to give away money they don't have. This is what I gather from their help pages.

Hmmmm, this is a bit confusing.

I can see this working if they have a backer that is paying the bills, but how long will that work out if the website is not making money on it's own? No investor will want to keep dumping money into a website that is just generating content and not showing profits. If I had a few million to waste I would do something very similar. The only difference is that I would pay actual USD or whatever currency a person uses lol Have you discovered Steemit yet? The social networking site that pays you to contribute I'd probably just do paypal payouts since that converts to the currency a person uses. This is why I agree with what Everett is saying and I too think that they are just trying to start up a new crypto currency. Bitcoins success sprouted a ton of new crypto currencies who were, and are, trying to become the next big thing but I don't know if that will happen again lol Have you discovered Steemit yet? I have come across a post about Steemit in another forum. But I have to admit that I didn't fully understand the mechanics. Yes, it's another social media platform but I am confused with a line that says posts in Facebook can earn. And is the money in dollars or bitcoin. I am not comfortable with bitcoins.
