How Often Should I Post New Content? Debate

How Often Should I Post New Content?

I have heard so many different things about how often I should post new content on a website for good SERP and traffic.

I have heard that I should post at least 3 times per week per website. However I have 3 websites, so publishing 9 great posts a week is just not possible for me. Yes I could get someone to help me write my content, but I prefer to do it myself.

One website is more like a hobby and then 2 websites are focused on making money. Can I get away with writing one quality post per website every week?

I would say to post as often as you can. Posting once a day or just once a week may not be enough and you're actually killing the growth of your website because the content isn't coming quick enough.

Post For The Search Engines:
When you're posting for the search engines you're posting content that is optimized and you want it to rank in the search engines in order to bring in readers, clients, sales, traffic, etc. I'm not telling you to post 50 scraped articles because that will just kill your credibility. Post genuine articles every time and you'll see your following grow pretty well over time. You don't have to post 100 times a day, but you should be posting at least once a day on average. This will keep your website fresh so that Google, Yahoo! and Bing like your pages even more. The more updated your website is, the better you will rank over time. Fresh content that is optimized is always great for your rankings and traffic.

Posting For Your Subscribers:
When you have a newsletter go out, you don't want to add all your new posts to it because that can be a bit overwhelming. I never want to get a newsletter with 100 links in it to new posts. I'd rather see a few links and a "more posts here" link where when I click it, I go to a new posts page and I can catch up. You can add a few links to your newsletter, but don't add every single post because people will just unsubscribe pretty quick How Often Should I Post New Content?

Razzy but the thing is that I can't post daily to 3 websites. It is just impossible. I can maybe post once a week to 2 of my websites and once a month to my 3rd website.

I don't think there's any magic answer (number or amount) that anyone can give you other than "regularly" or "often". People say that you should post regularly and often as search engines like sites that do publish new content they can crawl and by doing so you keep the spiders coming back to your site regularly and often as well. In fact, I agree with that and sometimes for a new site, I'll often post often and regularly just for that reason. Also people like it as well when sites update regularly and often with new and relevant content for them.

However, there are websites ranking high today that haven't added a single new word to their site in many years. So if Google likes sites that update regularly and often, how come those sites that don't update anything ever still rank high? One thing those sites have going for them is age and aged backlinks. They naturally rank high over other sites that update with new and amazing content every day. So sometimes it might be that you might not even need to update and add new content and posts to your site. But if it's not ranking high or could be ranking higher and you want it to rank for all different things as well then quite simply the way to do that is with on-page SEO and adding new content to it "regularly and often".

At the end of the day, if your website is like a personal blog, then your readers and people will know that it's a real person behind it who's writing those articles and posting them to it and they probably have a life and other things to do in their day and can't be expected to sit in front of their PC or laptop 24 hours a day typing away like a monkey. It's not realistic that you could do that. But it is advisable to post often and post regularly with new and fresh content both to appease your new readers and the search engines so you can get more readers anyway.

As long as you post at least one article a week or a month that would be better than not posting for months at a time. But as said, it all depends on what your limitations are, what your time restraints are and whether you need to or not. Try to aim to post at least 1 article a week or at least 2 a month. That way, any more you publish are just a bonus.

But articles can take time to write and research them self especially if you aren't sure what to write about or get brain lag. Just go at your own pace whatever rate you feel most comfortable going out without sacrificing on the quality of your content that's my advice. How Often Should I Post New Content?

Thank you for this explanation. I had someone crucify me in another forum when I said I am taking it slower and posting once a week. He said I may as well not post at all because my SERP will crash. He said I should be publishing 3-5 posts weekly for each website... I was like wtf?

I find it hard to write very often simply because I don't want to publish sub-standard content purely for he purpose of publishing content often. I would rather post less often and make sure that post is high quality content.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

idealmike
Well that person is a troll LOL Your SERP will not "crash" for posting only 1 article a week! That is just verbal diarrhea! Google have never said anything about consistency or that they value sites/blogs that update more often over other sites/blogs that don't update that often. If that was true, why is it that there's sites/blogs that are ranking high for things but haven't added any articles since 2001? It's backlinks that keep your site from tanking in the SERPs, not not adding regular content. That said, adding content regularly can keep the spiders coming back to your site and for new sites this is a good method of making sure that they do! But that can also be achieved by building new high quality do follow links to your site anyway. It's just that new content goes hand-in-hand with new backlinks. You add new content, you pick up more backlinks, that keeps the spiders coming back in 2 ways then and is how you take a site from nothing, to something.

But in some cases, it's not realistic or possible to add new content so quickly as well. Sure I can write 500 word posts in about 10 minutes. But it's been shown and proven that posts with around 2500 words rank much higher in the SERPs and to make posts with that many words takes time and takes research too.

At the end of the day, it's not the quantity that matters, it's the quality. And by taking your time to write and research an article that is a quality article does take time but it's much better to go slow at your own pace and produce articles that are high quality rather than knocking out tons of smaller ones.

So you're absolutely bang on the money there Lynn! How Often Should I Post New Content?

Thank you Mike, that is what I needed to hear. I would much rather go that route and really give my readers great quality articles. That guy said he writes a 1000 plus word article every day I just can't see how that would be quality content.

I can't write for the sake of writing. I have to write something that excites me or there is no point for me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

idealmike
Yeah, it's not about the amount you can churn out, it's not even about consistency. It's all about the quality and your readers will appreciate that. He may well be able to knock out 1000 word articles a day. Hey if you're really very clued up about something and know a lot about it then it's not really that hard you just think about something to talk about, give it a title and start writing until before you know it, you've created 1000+ words. I mean if I was talking about BMW M3's I could talk about them until the cows come home. That's because I know a fair a bit about them. But it would only be quality content if what I was saying about them wasn't really said before and that's not really the case with things like that, you're basically just resaying what's been said a million times before on a million other BMW blogs. I mean there's only so much you can say about one particular subject before you run out of things to say about it.

I don't know who that person is, where you was talking to him to, but he sounds like a liar and a troll if you ask me. Sometimes you get people that lie about things like that (DP is rife for it). But in reality, they're only talking about what they WISH they could do LOL How Often Should I Post New Content?

Yes very often that is true. I find some people love to shoot their mouth off, making big claims, and just slamming other people.

I didn't really get too worried about what he said because he really did say it in a not very nice way. He came across as arrogant and dismissive. I can't really respect what a person says to me when they are rude like that.

But I also like to check my facts so glad I posted this question and loving the answers that confirm I am right on track doing the right things.

Posting content regularly depends on your time since you would like to write them yourself. And writing takes time if you want to do it well. First you need to come up with a title or an idea that will enable you to write something that is helpful or valuable, and then you need to come up with certain keywords that will help you for SEO purposes. Including those keywords in a proper way while still keeping the content interesting and readable takes skill and time. Just try to do it as regularly as you can, at least 1 article per site every week. Ultimately it is more about quality than quantity. But some regularity obviously needs to be there.

For my answer we'll focus on your 2 money making websites:

I think one high quality post per week is sufficient, especially if you don't have time to write all day long. If you have subscribers to your money making website (and I hope you do), and you are constantly writing posts numerous times a day how are your subscribers going to keep up with you? You should hold a poll of some sort to see what they think about one post per week, or 2 post, etc.

Now as for your SERP, this would have to be based on the keywords you are targeting. Surely you want your articles to be as SEO friendly as possible, but I wouldn't necessarily make the entire post just to target specific keywords to rank up in the search listings, this looks like bad intent to people especially if they know what you are doing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Lynne
Yes that makes sense Everett and that is the thing that bothered me. I just mentioned it to Mike.... I was told by someone recently I should be posting 3-5 times weekly or not bother at all. I can't write content just for the sake of writing content. I like to spend time researching my posts and then spend time writing a nice article with focus on SEO... something that my readers will enjoy and something that I enjoy writing.

I don't want to send out loads of content that is not quality just for the sake of posting often.

Hello Lynne,
I am not saying you post your content regularly on your blog. and not telling how many content post on your in an week or a day. Do anything what you do. if you want to post 3 post in your blog a week, post exatctly 3 every week. please come back in your blog same time evey day or every week. this is very good for getting search engine. Hope you understand..
Thanks

So you are saying that consistency is more important than frequency? So as long as I post on the same day each week that is fine.

HI Lynne thanks for your nice posting. Yes your method is good for posting 3 post in a week and 9 for 3 website. And I am sure you know how to write depth content. And before posting any content, I should tell you optimize your post with SEO friendly. Do not need to post over in a week. You can make content even 2 in a week for your blog. You know different are between quality and quantity. So, should concentrate on quality content, do not on more post. Google very much insist on quality content. So, it may best for you, if you cannot manage time for writing content, hire someone for quality and professional content writing.

Quality is much more important than quantity so as long as the quality of the article is good, then once a week should be fine. However, you should bear in mind that your guests like regular content so if you don’t post enough regular content, you may lose guests. If there is nothing new all the time, then it encourages guests to leave so it isn’t all about SERP but also keeping guests on your blog. In terms of SERP, the amount of new content shouldn’t play a very big role on your rankings because Search engines care more about quality of content rather than quantity of content.

I have found that some of the people post daily. And that method may work for some but not all. So it all comes down how you choose to post content. It can be good to see how the posted content can be viral if it is based on latest content. A lot of people just reshare the most other viral content. And in such case regular posting is required.

The same thing happened to a friend who has 3 websites that he had to fill with contents. They are actually blogs of different genre. The first decision was to post updates twice a week and later he changed it to 3 times a week which was very taxing since he was alone in writing the articles. And maybe due to the pressure that he created, he got sick and had to slow down to once a week updates. He’s still enjoying his blogs and no much pressure anymore. So I guess an update once a week is just fine.
