    You are right that a press release is a way of spreading the news that your site is existing with a business that can be beneficial to the general or a particular segment of the public. The press release is actually the same as what we do when we promote a business in social media or posting the same in other sites. It is letting the world know of your business. But press release are normally advertisements in traditional media that you have to spend for it.

    What is the purpose of the news? To tell you about new things that are happening. That's why they call it news. Because it's new and newsworthy. So a press release is a way to tell the world or whoever should be concerned, that something new has happened either in your company or business or even on your website for example. Online press releases then can be a good way to drum up awareness about your new website, product or service that you've just launched. This can help build brand awareness and also create some good buzz as well as create some good backlinks to your site in the process. Some of the top press release sites are quite high authority sites now and links from them although they may be no follow can still be valuable to have. Also press releases are often shared on other sites that are related to the type of niche industry your site is in. This can result in backlinks from related sites as yours from your press release that contains your website links and company details etc in it. So it has several benefits to it.

    However these days press release sites have been quite heavily spammed. The free ones anyway and they don't have as much authority in the SERPs as they used to. While there are a few good free press release sites out there you can use, you'll be much better off investing in a premium press release service like PRWeb who will do it all properly for you and publish your press release on the top high authority press release sites and Google news sites etc. These will get seen and picked up by more people and more webmasters around the world who will go on to post those press releases elsewhere if it's about something they are interested in. But that's the nature of related content.

    It's worth mentioning here that you don't have to just post press releases to press release sites only. You can of course, publish it to your own site first of all which many big businesses and corporations do. Most big sites have a press release page or area on their site. This is good to do for your site of course because Google will give you the benefit of it being the original copy on your site so its content for your site which you can then use to submit as press releases as well but you can also post these virtually everywhere like on your social media sites, pages and profiles or to any of your Web 2.0 blogs as well. Basically anywhere where there is a place for it and it's worth posting about. What is the purpose of posting press releases?

    A press release or lately called media release is a promotional activity of events, products and anything including websites. When you post an invitation in Facebook for your friends to visit your website, that is a press release although it is more apt to call it marketing promotion. But a difference is that a press release is done only once while a marketing promotion is usually done on a regular basis like an advertisement simply because it is an advertisement already.
