What types of affiliates help SEO?

Affiliates are considered to be a major force for many businesses, yet they are often blamed for any pitfalls such as if a business site gets a Google penalty. In reality affiliates help a great deal by:

  • affecting the bounce rates,
  • have a direct impact on user experience,
  • they complement SEO efforts.

It could be that your affiliates rank well, and thus this helps a lot if your site is not gaining very good SERP. Effectively affiliates could ultimately help to knock down the links of your competitors when an online search is made, which is great!

But what about affiliate that just spam their affiliate links all over? I saw an interesting question about that on another thread. It was not something I have ever thought about but now that it was brought up I would think it could also have a detrimental effect.

If you have affiliates that do things the right way great, but what if they don't?

That is what an affiliate agreement is for. It will stipulate what you can and cannot do. Some will say that you're not allowed to use certain words like brand names in your campaigns, and some specifically state what sort of links you are or aren't allowed to create and what sort of things you are and aren't allowed to do. Any good (big) affiliate site will have an affiliate agreement that you must confirm and abide by as part of promoting it as an affiliate.

Yes true. But I have seen so many people just spamming links all over anyway. It may be in the affiliate agreement, but so many online marketers just ignore that and I would think that is a bit risky?

That is very true. That can indeed happen and usually does for smaller companies with a popular product or service that don't hire the right affiliate manager and don't moderate what their affiliates are doing. Some don't use a 3rd party who provide their own tracking/redirect links and just build an affiliate system into their site. While this can come with some benefits like saving money in extra affiliate manager fees it can also mean that the only links your affiliates can use is your own and if you just let any monkey with a blog join they can and will end up posting your links in unsavory places and or in unsavory ways and that can often get seen as spam and possibly get your site whacked with a Google penalty and even go on to effect your rankings which it would anyway if that happened and you got a penalty until you dealt with it and removed it that is. But by then there's no guarantee your rankings and traffic will come back to how it was before. So yes it's a risk, but it's also one you can avoid taking if you do it right and enforce your affiliate agreement and moderate your affiliates and keep tabs on what they're doing and make sure they know what they can and can't do from the start then it's possible to really minimize that happening and make sure you've only got great affiliates working for you in ways which are safe and prosperous for your site.

I've actually seen affiliates do great things for websites and also do horrible things for sites but they think they were doing good.

The good things I've seen affiliates do are marketing and SEO on their own affiliate links in order to help get ranked higher in the search engines for specific keywords. They tend to target the longer tailed keywords because the main keywords are more difficult to rank for since you're contending with the site you're promoting as well as all their competition. And we all know that by ranking for some long tailed keywords you can bring in some traffic that results in sales What types of affiliates help SEO?

When an affiliate does some SEO and marketing on their links it's not always a good thing. They affiliate may have just read a small ebook about how to do SEO and marketing and think they're a "guru" in the field already. So now you have someone with very little knowledge in the field and they think they're the best so they set out out and pay someone $5 for 100,000 blog comments on a few pages their promoting with their affiliate IDs. This is never really a good thing because now you have someone who thinks they're doing some good, actually harming your pages because we all know that 100,000 blog comments to a single page over night will easily get you a penalty. The affiliate thinks they're doing you some good, but they're actually messing up the rankings for your entire website What types of affiliates help SEO?

In the end, if you could cherry pick your affiliates, that would be amazing What types of affiliates help SEO?

I agree with you that your affiliates can help you with SEO. However, in a previous topic, we discussed that there are also disadvantages with affiliate programs. For example, affiliates can spam their affiliates links which harm your SERP. They may not mean to harm your SERP but they hope that, this method will bring them more sales but it actually harms your website. At the end of the day, everything has advantages and disadvantages and I guess this is the disadvantages that affiliates can bring to the table. We have however came up with solutions in that topic and overall the benefits does outweigh the costs.
