I'm still a little confused. What is the difference of Panda and Penguin update? How can these affect our sites?

If you are concerned how the Google updates namely Panda and Penguin will affect your site then I guess you already have experience if those updates have affected your site or not. It makes me wonder why there are some site owners who seem to be very concerned with the Google updates when in fact those updates were about the algorithm which means it is focused on the search and not on the sanctions.
