What could cause a site's position to fluctuate in Google search?

Let's say that you are on first page of Google for your keyword and then check one day to find out that you have slipped four pages. What could cause that type of change in position?

This could be the google dance. Did you recently build new back links to your site?

If not, they may be updating their algorithm or refreshing an old one.

And, then later when you are logged out or using another computer/browser, you may appear lower as Google does not detect your personal connection to the site you are searching.
