How do you keep from losing search engine ranking when you move pages?

On a forum, it's fairly common to move discussions around, especially when new subforums are created. Just wondering how to prevent those pages from losing their place in search engines.

Well that's what the the 301 redirect rule is for. It tells search engines that the location of the content has changed permanently. Most good forum scripts will auto create the 301 rule in the htaccess file for you when you move it so that the old location redirects to the new location. So long as it has this rule, search engines can continue ranking it even if the URL has changed. You would need to check with whatever forum script you're running. Probably consult the manual that comes with it or send a support ticket or something to the developer of it just to be sure. But I've seen that most forums redirect to the new source even if the URL has changed. I'd imagine that to be the case but if you're really concerned then find out if your particular forum script does do that. Otherwise the thing to do would be to manually create a 301 rule in your htaccess file yourself so that the old location can be redirected permanently to the new location.

Do you really think that the web page loses its ranking in search engines when you move it to another location? I am confused with this because as long as the link is working I don’t see any problem with that regarding search engines unless you are talking about the backlinks that you have posted. I know that the backlink will point to the specific web page in your site that has been moved and that may be an issue.
