Do you need to rank number one for a keyword to get traffic?

My blog is in a very competitive niche and so far I've only been able to rank on third page for this keyword term. I am getting some traffic from Google despite not being number one for that keyword term. Is there some way to increase my odds of competing with these more popular websites?

You don't need to rank number one or in the top three for a keyword to get traffic. Some studies have shown that so long as you rank in the top three of a page (whether first second or third page), you are likely to get click throughs. Maybe this happens because people are just skimming results and want instant gratification. So they are more likely to click on one of the top results, no matter what page.

It depends on the keyword you are on top. If any keywords which brings loads of searches daily and you are on top 1,2 or 3 position for that you will get good traffic. But if keyword is less competitive and less number of searches are there then you many not get your desired traffic even.

Obviously, you don't need to rank as number one, but it really helps. Many times, I will choose the result on the first page of search that best suits my needs, not just one of the top three. Just remember that ranking as number one still doesn't ensure you will get clicks on your link. The information in the rich data snippet included in the search listing should be relevant to the person making the search. Otherwise, they are not likely to click through if it only seems slightly related to their search query.

tha tdepend on keyword you target if very informative you will get trafficeven if you are in page 2 in google if some specific keyword you need to be in 1st place

Well that's really relative. Observing the traffic stats from dozends of websites over two decates, I never saw a search term ranking n°1 and not recieving traffic!
The average traffic share for a search term ranking #1 is about 40% - that should be a good reason to try getting that spot.

You don't have to be number one search engines for the given keyword in order to generate traffic from search engines. However, your will get more traffic if you appear in the top search results compared to the third or fourth-page ranking. In order to outsmart your competitors, you will have to improve your content, use better SEO strategies, may even have to use less competitive keywords that still get high search query.

My take on the search list is always the top 5 or sometimes the top 10 links. I don’t remember clicking at once at the link in the number 1 position. I always check on the links that I see before clicking because most of the time, the number 1 in the search list is not that relevant to me. Maybe the owner of that website is good with the SEO methods that his website is always in number 1 but it’s not a guarantee of traffic.
