Yes, it is important. You should try to get your website loading speed lower as much as possible. Lots of images can slow it down and if you have a forum, lots of mods can also slow things. :P

Really Sean, are you serious about the mods part?Large mods and/or lots, yes. I have a forum (XboxLiveFan.org) with a lot of mods done to it. its nothing to worry about, but yeah, it can contritube to slowing the loading speed

Of course you'll lose quality. Use thumbnails on images. Limit its sizes.
And when your reader clicks your image, an HQ one will pop-up. It will definitely load a little faster.
