    What methods did you use which caused a loss?

    Try get authoritive white hat links from high PR sources. This may bring you back.

    Sounds like you were de-indexed from the serps. I just recovered a penguin penalized site.

    Look for warning message in webmaster tools...read it

    Look for dupe content...kill it

    Look at bad links...disavow them

    look for excessive identical anchor text...change some

    look at on-page over optimization...fix it

    track keyword rankings (microsite masters free 10 KW account)

    wait...

    wait some more...

    Last option...send google message that you fixed (make list of fixes)


    I recovered in some KW's in 1.5 months so it seemed to have been a auto penalty and I still have not sent a message in webmaster....we are still waiting to see what comes back.

    @neal2000, last year I worked on the SEO for a site that had been severely penalized by Panda updates. This was even before Penguin. And, I found that much of the content of the site was copied from another site. Also, most of the backlinks were from trash sites, link farms, directories, etc. I removed all duplicate content; added original content daily; created RSS feeds and distributed and got some good edu backlinks and a few good links from Google+ (after some intensive keyword research) and within the first month the site started ranking for those chosen long tail keywords. Any site can be recovered, even ones penalized by Google.

    Losing the keyword rankings will cause many things behind that...like Over optimization, Over Submissions...First you have to avoid all these crap then follow some best off-page techniques like "Link Wheel - Forums - Blogs - Ads Posting through Classifieds - Video Marketing" to bring the good feature of keyword rankings in search engines...
