    Possibly, one way to know if a link is popular, is how many times it's clicked on. So the amount of traffic that a link brings to your site could be one indicator.

    How can you identify the traffic that comes to your website, is there an indicator that it came from a particular backlink? If that is possible then I guess it is a good thing to monitor the incoming traffic so you will know which backlinks are getting more hits.
