This was a very popular way of getting backlinks some time back. Just be sure the blog is very closely related to your own blog so the backlink on the page going to your site is considered valid and relevant by Google.

I have read several discussions on the guest posting that I think it really gets good traffic from the backlinks. The trick is to find a popular blog that will let you publish a guest blog. And naturally, the blog that you will submit would be an excellent read to impress the followers of that blogger. The link in your signature may not be enough so it is advised that you add a footer to your article that has your website’s link explicitly.
