I think everything must be kept in a natural way. Keep in clean and natural, don't force anything and everything should be fine. Don't just guest post for backlinks, do it because you have something of value to share.

Really though, two years after this post was published, he came out with this: https://www.mattcutts.com/blog/guest-blogging/

And, I can see where guest blogging solely for backlinking is a bad practice as it usually involves poorly spun content being published on other sites for sole purpose of getting that backlink, rather than branding the writer as an expert or in any way helping the reader.

If a person's main goal is to, as you said, share something of value, that actually enriches the reader's life (whether on one's own blog or another person's blog), then that is a good kind of 'guest blogging' and really no different than what you see on a lot of the really big print and digital magazines now. A big part of the problem is the webmaster who allows guest blog spam to be published. So, the pressure is on the site publisher/webmaster to ensure the guest blog content posted to his site is highest quality and he's not just accepting thin content for the sake of having something to publish.
