Do backlinks from pdf documents count for SEO?

I've published a few pdf documents and most times they end up in Google search engines. Just wondering if the links in those pdf documents are counted for SEO purposes. If so, that might be a good way to get backlinks as pdf's are viral and spread the internet easily.

I am really not sure. But don't beat yourself up over it. Whether or not they help for a seo, if it brings you traffic, and increases your sales. Then, to me that is all that matters.

Exactly. if it helps your success then its good for the site. Are the links from pdf files dofollow?
I usually encounter some of these pdf files that are indexed by google. Some of them are found through searching texts, especially if you look into an article whether its unique and while searching some pdf file are among the results.

PDF files doesn't use HTML right? So there could be no way it is dofollow...

I have been receiving some PDF documents from banks and airline companies that have some links inside. But I don’t remember clicking on those links although I see them when I open the email. Surely the link will work but regarding search engines, the SEO is about the crawlers that crawl on the site to check the contents. In the case of the PDF file how could the crawler open the PDF file? I don’t think they will read that.
